THE UNREST OF THE CIVIL - THE L.A. RIOTS 15 YEARS LATER

W
Why the Media will be Culpable in the Next Major Race Riot

Fifteen years ago today, Los Angeles was in the midst of the largest riot to ever take place in this country’s history. Plagued by poverty, lack of quality schools, lack of access to adequate preventive health care, and a lack of employment and career opportunities, Los Angeles merely represented the only thing that could happen in order to get folks with power to pay attention to the societal ills in South L.A. that continued to persist.

And America is on the verge of watching history repeat itself. Only this time, it won’t be contained to just one or two cities simultaneously. The whole country could easily erupt all at once.

Race Gap Cited in Traffic Searches

(AP) Black drivers are more likely to be searched and arrested, and police are more likely to use or threaten force against them per a just released report.

As a former prosecutor and judge for over 15 years, I can say without hesitation that race significantly impacts how officers interact with traffic offenders.

Released by the department's Bureau of Justice Statistics, the report covered police contacts with the public during 2005. The numbers appear consistent with those found in a similar study of police-public contacts in 2002, a co-author of the report indicated.

Black, Hispanic and white motorists were equally likely to be pulled over by police -- between 8 percent and 9 percent of each group.

The racial disparities, however, immediately reared their ugly head after that point:

Blacks (9.5 percent) were much more likely to be searched than whites (3.6 percent). African Americans (4.5 percent) were also more than twice as likely as whites to be arrested.

Among all police-public contacts, force was used 1.6 percent of the time. But officers were more likely to use force against or to threaten to use force against African Americans (4.4 percent) than against whites (1.2 percent).

THAT'S NOT L.A. BURNIN' - IT'S THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY BRIDGE

Highway Section Crumbles After Tanker Explodes

(AP) - A gasoline tanker crashed and burst into flames near the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge on Sunday, creating such intense heat that a stretch of highway melted and collapsed.

Officials predict traffic nightmares for local commuters for weeks or months to come.

Flames shot 200 feet in the air, but the truck's driver walked away from the scene with second-degree burns. No other injuries were reported in the 3:45 a.m. crash, which officials said could have been deadly had it occurred at a busier time.

"I've never seen anything like it," Officer Trent Cross of the California Highway Patrol said of the interchange. "I'm looking at this thinking, wow, no one died."

FIRST ROSA PARKS, NOW CAROL MOSELEY BRAUN ATTACKED

Arriving home after seeing the musical "Wicked", former U.S. senator Carol Moseley Braun suffered a broken wrist when a wicked mugger tried to steal her purse by cutting the straps.

PLEASE TELL US THIS FOOL WASN'T BLACK!!!

According to authorities, Braun, 59, was standing at her front door late Friday when an assailant came out of the bushes. When Braun resisted, the man pulled a knife.

"I turned to look and saw a woman on the ground and a man on top of her assaulting her," Zachary Trayes-Gibson said. After the attacker ran off without the purse, Trayes-Gibson was surprised to learn who he was helping.

Braun said she was grateful to Zachary and Rachel McFadden for assisting her, "They very well could have saved my life."

Braun, a Democrat from Illinois, became the first black woman elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, serving one term. She lost her re-election bid in 1998. After her defeat, President Clinton appointed her ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa.

She made an unsuccessful run for the presidency in 2004, following in the late Congressman Shirley Chisholm's footsteps (click here).

Braun's recent experience seems eerily similar to what a giant in the African American community experienced some thirteen years ago:

AUGUST 31, 1994 - Her face bruised and her lip swollen, the mother of the civil rights movement seemed more sad than angry as she quietly described being robbed and beaten in her bedroom.

"I regret very much that some of our people are in such a mental state that they would hurt and rob an older person," Rosa L. Parks said as she sat in her modest, rented home, five blocks from the boulevard named in her honor.

Parks, whose defiance of segregation in 1955 led to the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama was listed in good condition. The 81-year old pioneer was released without being admitted to the hospital.

Mrs. Parks would go on to live another decade, before graduating in 2005 at the ripe age of 92. (AP)

BLACK COMIC BOOK HEROES: TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!!!

By Kathy Hanrahan

(AP) JACKSON, Miss. — Comic books have become hot again, thanks to the successes of NBC's "Heroes," the Spider-Man films and the revived Superman and Batman franchises.

But a new exhibit at Jackson State University offers a glimpse into another world of the comics.
The exhibition, "Other Heroes: African-American Comics, Creators, Characters and Archetypes," focuses on topics such as the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina and racial stereotypes.

"It is how we see ourselves as African-Americans through the medium and also how others see the 'idea of blackness' through that medium" said John Jennings, co-curator of the exhibit.

While the most well known black comic strip, "The Boondocks," has gained national attention as part of Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" lineup, many believe black characters and black creators are still marginalized.

We agree.

What A Teen Said About $15 Shoes

The other day I played basketball with a teenager named Johnathan. Next year he'll play on the varsity team for Aliso Niguel High School. You may remember that school. It made national news last year with the Principal (a stalwart African-American man) banned school dances because the kids were getting too freaky-deaky on the dance floor.

While Johnathan schooled me on the court I asked him about Starburys, the Stephon Marbury sponsored athletic shoe line. You may remember those shoes. They made national headlines last year when Stephon, a highly regarded NBA player, promoted a line of shoes where the top retail price was only $15. Parents and civic leaders praised Stephon and the shoes manufacturers.

But what do the kids, the primary market target, think about them?

So I asked Johnathan. "We ain't really diggin' 'em," he said. "How come," I replied. "Because they're cheap?" "You mean because they only cost $15 dollars, your peers won't buy them?" "That's right." Then he shot a three-pointer over my head.

I didn't have any wise old man retort at the time but it did make me think that in an era when we get our collective underwear all knotted up over Don Imus, how are we addressing, and I mean really addressing, the present values of our kids?

I don't have any stock in the company and I don't know Stephon Marbury but I do applaud what he is doing. So here's my pledge: the next basketball shoes I buy will cost $15. Who knows, maybe that might turn the head of some teen and even help me do a little better on the basketball court.

Don't know about the shoes? Click this

TENNESSEE FORD DYNASTY TAKES ANOTHER HIT

First Harold Loses US Senate Seat, Now Uncle Found Guilty Of Bribery

Sidebar--

(AP) Former State Sen. John Ford, 64, a prominent member of a politically powerful family, was convicted Friday of accepting $55,000 in bribes.

An active Memphis Democrat since the 70's, Ford is facing up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Given his age and the fact that he would be considered a first-time offender, a reduced sentence is likely.

Prosecutors gave jurors an up-close look at Ford stuffing his pockets with $100 bills counted one by one by an undercover FBI agent. A total of eight video clips were presented, as well as dozens of audio recordings from various meetings.

Just because Ford took his consulting payments in $100 bills does not mean they were illegal, his attorney argued.

Yeah, right!

In all, 11 people have been charged - several of whom are African-American. But Ford, brother of former Congressman Harold Ford Sr. and uncle to Jr., is the best-known defendant to go to trial. No racism here folks- just greed.
