MAY 4--A Louisiana college student has been charged with threatening the life of Hillary Clinton, whom the man said he would kill when she visited Baton Rouge.

Richard Wargo, a 19-year-old Louisiana State University freshman, was arrested yesterday after he allegedly told a fellow student that he wanted to commit an act of terrorism and wanted to know if the classmate was interested in participating. The planned terror act, Wargo told the other student last month, would be a "national event" and mentioned Clinton's name when asked if it was politically motivated, according to the below search warrant.

Clinton is scheduled to speak in Baton Rouge in connection with the National Conference of Black Mayors gathering. When Wargo's classmate told him that an attack on Clinton would make her even more popular, he responded, according to the warrant, "True, but have you ever heard of a dead president?" Wargo, a physics major, was arrested after his classmate yesterday contacted university police and reported his statements.

During a search last night of Wargo's dormitory room, investigators seized a laptop computer, cell phone, and several containers of marijuana, according to an inventory sheet. Charged with terrorizing and an arson rap, Wago is being held on $1 million bond at the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, where the mug shot at right was taken.

Barack Obama emerged a clear winner in Thursday's debate among 8 Democratic candidates for President, according to a SurveyUSA poll of 403 South Carolina debate watchers. 31% of debate watchers say Obama won.

The Illinois Senator was the overwhelming favorite of black viewers. New York Senator Hillary Clinton finished 2nd, picked as the winner by 24% of viewers.

Clinton, the only female candidate, did better among women than among men. Former U.S. Senator John Edwards finished 3rd, picked as the winner by 14%.

Obama did three times better than Clinton and twice as well as Edwards among South Carolina's Independents. Obama and Clinton tied among Democrats.

Edwards and Obama tied among Republicans. Clinton won among white viewers. 60% of debate viewers were white. 36% of debate viewers were black.

We're counting the hours until the MSNBC 2008 Democratic Presidential debate, but we have to give kudos to South Carolina State in Orangeburg for landing quite a coup.

Although we're partial to Morehouse College (2 of the 3 brothers on this site went there), it's great to see historically black colleges and universities getting some love.

And as we watch Barack snatch more support away from John Edwards in general and Hilary in particular, how cool is it that the smackdown will be held in the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium? (fyi - King was a Morehouse man)

RUSSELL SIMMONS VS. BARACK: IGNORANCE SPEAKS TO TRUTH

Barack found himself criticized Monday by one of rap and hip-hop's leading producers, Russell Simmons, who challenged the brother to stop criticizing rappers' lyrics.

"My response to Sen. Obama is that you have to talk about the poverty and ignorance that creates such a climate that the poets can talk like that," Simmons told ABC News. "And all the politicians owe them an education and an opportunity for a better life — and maybe they'll say something better."

WHAT THE HELL IS SIMMONS TALKING ABOUT?

This is not a "criticize" or "do something" conversation. This is about Black folk no longer co-signing on images and lyrics that denegrate our women just so a few, ala Simmons, get paid.

It's also about holding the village accountable. Everyone who's got a hut needs to demand that the schools are safe, demand that our children have books, demand that victimhood is no longer a place we're trying to hang out in.

Co-founder of Def Jam Records, Simmons also appeared on Oprah today in a panel that included hip-hop artist Common; Jason Whitlock, a sports columnist for The Kansas City Star; Bruce Gordon, former president of the NAACP, writer Stanley Crouch, and Rev. Al Sharpton via satellite.

The Oprah Winfrey show issued a release: "The group will address whether or not there is a double standard in this country, what behavior different races are willing and not willing to tolerate, and why women and minorities often are targets for derogatory and degrading comments. Winfrey asks the panel to consider if this incident could be a 'tipping point' for American society."

WASHINGTON, April 15 — As Hillary seeks to reassemble Bill's Democratic money machine, some of those major fund-raisers have already signed on with Barack.

Obama's biggest fund-raisers include at a minimum, a dozen major fund-raisers for former President Clinton. His released info shows the extent to which the Democratic Party establishment, once presumed to back Senator Clinton, is drifting.

But Hilary's campaign proved it still had the support of some deep pockets. About 5,100 big contributors accounted for about three quarters of the $26 million combined that she raised for the primary and general election, pulling her very slightly ahead of Mr. Obama by just $200,000 in total fund-raising for the quarter.

Her campaign also reported about $1.6 million in debt. Mr. Obama’s campaign spent $6.6 million, ending up with $18.2 million for the primary and $190,000 in debt.

(CBS 5) OAKLAND Illinois Senator Barack Obama is closing in on Senator Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination. One poll shows Obama trailing Clinton by just five points.With a tight eight-piece funk band establishing the mood, national and local press covering the event, the Senator from Illinois got set to deliver his speech at an appearance in Oakland on Saturday."All right…

This is a good looking crowd, too," Obama said to the crowd.When the history of the campaign is written, March 2007 will be the month Barack Obama undid, at least for the moment, the inevitability of the Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee despite her organization."She has the support of the most popular president in modern history, and it's still not enough at this point to make Obama be three paragraph's down in the news story instead of being right next to her in the same paragraph," said CBS 5 Political Analyst Joe Tuman.

Obama has overcome several obstacles. He is of mixed race, which some say therefore not a genuinely African-American candidate.The appearance of old-line national black political leader and now Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums at the Obama rally helped quiet that discussion, so does 10,000 people."His appearance in Oakland was one of the kinds of things he needs to do to shore up African-American voters as a block for him," Tuman said.The creepy and nasty attack ad now on YouTube, using an old apple ad, to portray Clinton as a controlling politician, while disavowed by Obama could have backfired.

Instead, it has brought nearly half-a-million showings.People in Oakland brightened a bit when asked about Obama. They said they thought he understood, and it was time for him. Outside a church on 14th Street, CBS 5 talked to Roshawna Tibbs, a 22-year-old registered voter."We need a black president. There are black secretaries. Black people working in the white house. Why not have a black president?" Tibbs said. "Is it a pride thing? I wouldn't call it that. I'd call it a fair thing." But Tibbs also said many people in her neighborhood said the system would never let it happen.
