American Idol: Gives Back and Gets Big Votes

This Tuesday at 8:00 PM, television show juggernaut, "A. I." will stop stuffing money into its pockets (and Fox's) for two episodes as the current top six finalists will compete with songs the producers are calling "life anthems."

We guess that's stuff like "We Are The World" or "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing." (Lord help us).

Nevertheless, for each vote cast, a variety of corporate sponsors will donate money to specific charitable organizations. The following evening will be a two-hour celebrity telethon where viewers can make contributions. This charitable event is modeled from BBC TV's "Red Nose Day" that raised almost $80 million this year.

Just over 122 million voted in the past presidential election. An "Idol" season grabs over 500 million votes.

Viewers have fallen in love with the glitzy combination of reality show and talent competition and thus they vote their choices with gusto. What does that say about the state of politics or the American consciousness when a Sanjaya can get more votes than a presidential candidate?! Will this crop of presidential candidates have to sing and dance their political positions!?

Wow, guess Bill Clinton knew what he was doing when he picked up a saxophone.
