BEYOND THE BET HYPE, BALDWIN HILLS IS WHERE WE CALL HOME
IS ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE FOR US?
Baldwin Hills, California is more than just a BET reality show about a bunch of rich bourgeoisie Black kids. It's a real community primarily composed of African Americans made up of families with a deep love and concern for their surrounding environment.
One of the most appealing aspects of the Baldwin Hills area is its plush hillsides and access to natural walking trails in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles.
In 2001, I lay witness to African Americans and others coming together over an environmental issue in a way I had never seen before.
There was a proposal to construct a power plant in the expanding park of the Baldwin Hills community.
Through a well-organized grass-roots communications network, a community which comprised of all races and economic backgrounds came together and fought to defeat that proposal and won.
