LeRoi Moore,Dave Mathews Band Founder and Sax Man Dies

LeRoi Moore sax player for the Dave Mathews Band has died at only 46 years of age. His eclectic saxophone playing was ageless as it capture the loyal old guard of jazz and rock and allowed the Dave Mathews Band to capture a new younger audience as Moore also brought in its soul and Cajun influences. The band may be called the Dave Mathews Band but make no mistake, the entire band knows LeRoi Moore was it's heart and soul.

Moore died at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was admitted with complications that arose weeks after a June 30 all-terrain vehicle(ATV) accident. On that day Moore crashed his ATV on his farm outside Charlottesville, Va., but was discharged and returned to his Los Angeles home to begin physical therapy. Complications forced him back to the hospital on July 17, the band said.

The band formed in 1991 in Charlottesville, Va., when Matthews was working as a bartender. He gave a demo tape of his songs to Moore, who liked what he heard and it was Moore who recruited his friend and fellow jazzman Carter Beauford to play drums, and all the other musicians that would make up the band.
