ARE BLACK NBA BALLERS LIKE IVERSON GIVING BROTHERS A BAD RAP?
You Can Find Him in Tha Club
NBA superstar Allen Iverson has to give up $260,000 to one of two men that sued him for being beaten up by his entourage in a Washington nightclub.
The amount covers Marlin Godfrey’s pain and suffering in addition to his medical bills after he claimed Iverson’s bodyguards beat him to the floor and even used a glass bottle during the assault.
Although he and the other plaintiff were seeking $20 million, which included punitive damages, Godfrey claims that he isn’t upset about the smaller amount awarded to him as “it was never about the money.”
Iverson testified that the men were simply trying to cash in on his fame and fortune and claims to have never seen the fight. Iverson was found negligent for failing to supervise his bodyguard sufficiently.
So let’s get this straight. Allen Iverson is going to have to pay $260,000 to a bar patron for his bodyguard(s) beating him up without him throwing a punch, landing a Timberland boot to a head, or even releasing an angry shove?
Yes, Allen Iverson has a bit of a past, as he is facing more charges stemming from separate nightclub fight involving his security just two weeks before this altercation. But how much control is the 6'0, 170-something pound guard supposed to have over two other grown-ass men when they choose to take things too far?
The thought that he didn’t supervise his bodyguards well enough simply sounds like he had a couple of pet dogs that he neglected to keep on a leash before they ran down the street and took a bite out of a young kid’s leg.
It sounds like it's Iverson’s responsibility to shed the dead weight of idiotic security that think they are paid to bully anyone Iverson doesn’t agree with. Imagine that!
So what did this entire squabble start over? Well, the two men that were allegedly assaulted refused to vacate the VIP section of the club for Iverson and his group. Wait… Godfrey was beaten to the floor, blacked out, and suffered head injuries, damaged ear drums, and long-term psychological problems because they didn’t leave a section of the club that they were already sitting in?
The level of foolishness and lack of common sense in these bodyguard’s minds is what gives credence to people continuing to believe that players like Iverson are nothing but thugs, ignorant Black men with nothing better to do except flex their muscle through brain-dead security personnel.
I’m really trying, and I find myself looking for excuses, but it’s getting harder and harder to defend such blatant and outright dim-witted actions of prominent Black men in the spotlight and under the well-known scrutiny of the public.
