Florida African-American Father Gets Tased And Ends Up Dead: Who's Responsible?
Was Xavier Jones Acting A Straight-Up Fool?
A brotha stunned with a Taser is dead and Black folks want to know why. Miami-Dade police are investigating the death of 29-year-old Xavier Jones after a Coral Gables officer believes he did what he had to do what he felt was beligerent, combative behavior.
Officers were called to the University Inn Condominiums new the University of Miami after an altercation at a party early Friday morning. There, they found four people partying inside an apartment. A security guard went to the apartment to tell them to chill, but then found himself in a scuffle with a man inside.
The altercation ended up in the street. Police said that when Coral Gables officers arrived at the scene one officer used a Taser to subdue the belligerent man. Police said the man looked to be high on some type of narcotic. "They had to deploy the electronic control device," Maura said. "He was taken into custody. The father and carpenter from Opa-locka had some kind of medical situation. Coral Gables Fire Department responded. They transported him to Doctor's Hospital where he was pronounced deceased."
"I'm sad for my son because he loves his father," said the mother of Jones' child.
Paramedics administered epinephrine to Jones to counteract the drugs in his system, but it was ineffective. Tasers used on people who are high on drugs are known to cause heart attacks, authorities said.
