FOLKS WHO GET IT: ATTORNEY JOHNNIE COCHRAN HONORED

Renowed Cedars-Sinai neurosurgeon Keith Black has counseled thousands of patients with brain tumors and performs hundreds of surgeries each year.

But few things have been more wrenching, he says, than watching his friend, attorney Johnnie Cochran, succumb to one of the deadliest types of brain tumors two years ago.

This past week, the preeminent African-American doctor cut the ribbon for the Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Brain Tumor Center, a facility dedicated to promoting promising cancer treatments.

Johnny Cochran, a hero, mentor, fellow Kappa fraternity brother, became the nation's most recognizable attorney when he won an acquittal for O.J. Simpson in 1995. (Bio)

The new center named after him aims to become a clearinghouse for research advancements, to shepherd new discoveries through patient trials, and increase access worldwide.

The dedication drew an assortment of entertainment industry glitterati to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, as well as an evening gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
