Chuck Hagel today became the third Republican senator to call for the resignation of Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales. The Nebraska senator said his decision was prompted by testimony yesterday before the Senate Judiciary Committee of James B. Comey, a former deputy attorney general. Comey described a 2004 hospital room showdown with Gonzales, then White House counsel, over approval of a classified program that nearly prompted the resignations of much of the Justice Department’s leadership.
