CHICAGO, Ill. (WBBM) -- When a 13-year-old girl ran screaming, half-dressed, from a South Side apartment after she had been raped and her brothers killed by their mother's boyfriend, she may have saved her mother's life as well.
That revelation came out as a judge denied bail to the 36-year-old convicted sex offender. accused of rape and two murders.
Assistant State's Attorney Luann Rodi Snow said that suspect Brian Gilbert allegedly confessed to police that early on in the attack, he decided that he "would leave no witnesses."
In a videotaped confession, Gilbert stated that he arrived at about midnight to return a cell phone and bus pass that the boys' mother lent him. He decided to discipline the boys about cleaning up and then became angry. Snow said he first struck 14-year-old Quinton Jackson with a barbell.
When the other children protested, he obtained a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Quinton. Gilbert also allegedly said that when the younger children tried to escape, he tied up 12-year-old Marquise Jackson, raped his 13- year-old sister, killed Marquise, then rape the girl again before stabbing her.
Thinking all three were dead, he put them into a closet and tried to clean up the blood. Gilbert also allegedly confessed that he had planned to kill the woman when she returned home from work. When the daughter ran out the home screaming, Gilbert fled to the nearby home of an ex-girlfriend, whom he told he "had done something terribly wrong."
