WHY IS A BLACK GOVERNOR AT A GAY PRIDE PARADE?

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick became the first governor of that state to march in a gay pride parade on Saturday, which he did alongside his daughter Katherine and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

The African-American Democrat said he wanted to keep Massachusetts a state where same-sex couples could marry legally. His actions come just days before state lawmakers were expected to vote on a ballot question that could ban gay marriage.

Patrick said the 2003 court decision that paved the way for gay marriage "affirmed the principle that everyone comes before the court as equals."
