BREAKING NEWS! TEDDY PENDERGRAS DEAD AT 59
These days, Pendergrass is using his voice to raise awareness about quality-of-life issues for people who have suffered spinal-cord injuries.
Pendergrass, whose spine was crushed in a 1982 auto accident that broke his neck and left him almost completely paralyzed, is the featured performer at his star-studded Teddy 25 — A Celebration Of Life, Hope, and Possibilities, Sunday at the Kimmel Center in his hometown of Philadelphia.
"Quality of life is the most important thing that we live for," Pendergrass said during a phone interview Thursday. "We don't live for a cure because there is no cure. The injury is not a disease —you can't pop a pill and cure it."
Legendary music producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff are the chairmen of the event, which features performances by Patti LaBelle, Stephanie Mills, Ruben Studdard and Musiq Soulchild and is hosted by comedian Mo'Nique.
