Colorful author Terry McMillan, 55, is taking former husband Jonathan Plummer, 32, to court for 40-million, alleging he tried to smear her reputation during their highly publicized 2005 divorce. Their older-woman, younger-man relationship inspired her 1996 best-selling novel and movie, "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" starring Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs.
The lawsuit asserts that Plummer, a secretly gay Jamaica native, wedded McMillan for the sole purpose of becoming a U.S. citizen. Plummer and his lawyer, Dolores Sargent, are alleged to have conspired to threaten, humiliate and embarrass her in an attempt to extort money upon dissolution of their seven year marriage.
Her civil claim will focus on fraud, intent, and actual damage to her ability to earn a living as a celebrated writer with a dedicated female following. Settlement is highly probable.
Plummer -- now a hair stylist -- was too busy doing a press and curl to comment.
