VP Nominee Joe Biden to Endorse Black Republican Candidate Abram Wilson in California Assembly Race!?

“Vice Presidential candidate Joe Biden in a recent visit to the Bay Area a few days ago endorsed Abram Wilson (shown here with his wife Dr. Karen Wilson) the Republican Candidate running in the sharply contested 15th District Assembly Race in Contra Costa, Alameda, Sacramento, and San Joaquin Counties. This seat, the most contested legislative district in Northern California, has a 2% registration difference between Republicans and Democrats – Biden’s endorsement could put the African American Mayor of San Ramon over the top.”

And – if you believe that – I have some swampland in Florida to sell you.

The thought of the liberal “Joe Senator” endorsing mainstream Republican Wilson is about as likely as the thought of Republican VP Nominee Sarah Palin endorsing union-backed Joan Buchanan in this contested race.

Yet, a mailer sent out this week from a group called “Create Change – Support Joan Buchanan Independent Expenditure Committee” suggested that Republican Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin was indeed supporting Buchanan, a Democrat.

Confused? The story continues ...

Aside From The Recent Discovery of A Plot To Kill Barack, This Black Man's Campaign Has Gone Relatively Smooth

LIGHT OF DAY

By Erin Aubry Kaplan

The presidential election is coming down to its final, frantic moments, and one of the biggest shocks in a year of many is that, at this point, I have almost nothing to say.

This is an oddly pleasant shock in a notably unpleasant election season. Why pleasant? The stones I expected to be overturning to loudly describe the slimy creatures underneath have all been overturned.

Racism in advertising, running-mate incompetence, genuine public fury over the government’s weekly scramble to bail out the rich on the backs of the working and middle class (or what’s left of it), shrill charges and counter-charges of anti-Americanism that make McCarthy look a moderate—it has all come to the fore, and not a moment too soon.

Overtaken by our own missteps and a sense that we’re approaching a critical moment in our brief history, America is seeing itself plainly in a hall of mirrors it has assiduously avoided for the last several election cycles; we have no choice but to look now and realize that the distortions and grotesqueries are not tricks, but real. We may still be the most possible place on earth, but right now we’re the ugly America. We need a makeover. Bad.

Are we going to get one? Hard to say. Barack in the White House will undoubtedly give us a face-lift, a cosmetic boost to our flagging self-image and far worse international image as a guiding light of democracy where anybody with craft and ingenuity can make it.

Besides being black, Barack is young and handsome, cool and charismatic. He’s a big ego who has nonetheless encouraged people to project onto him their own image of a more perfect or prosperous America, and it’s worked. Unlike the top-down cults of personality led by presidents over the last 30 years, Barack is a tabula rasa that people have gotten behind like nothing and no one else.

I thought for sure his color and all the complex, troubled history it entails would have made that impossible; I was wrong. Oh, he still might lose the election, and he might very well lose it because of color. But his triumph as a new model of politician, especially a consensus-building black politician, is already complete. I thought a year ago that this was the worst time for a black candidate to run, with so much at stake; now I see that this is the only time that made sense.

A rookie psychologist will tell you that it’s only when all the crap gets dredged up into the light of day and all the lies people have been telling themselves are laid bare that they are most willing to make drastic change.

But the second and more urgent question is, will there be change, drastic or otherwise? Barack getting there won’t be enough. Looks are important, but they’re only the beginning, the means to an end. We’re almost done with beginning. The end, far from being the Christian apocalypse we’ve come to associate with the word, is what will save us. All of us.

SHOCKING!!! Sleeping Pills Overdose For Former Black NBA Player & Coach Isiah Thomas

Police were reportedly sent to the home of former New York Knicks head coach and president Isiah Thomas early Friday morning in response to a call that Thomas had overdosed on sleeping pills.

WCBSTV in New York reported Friday afternoon on the overdose. The television station said that Thomas was rushed to a White Plains Hospital for treatment, but his condition is not yet known.

Thomas was fired by the Knicks on April 18 by new president Donnie Walsh, ending his disastrous two-year tenure as head coach. The Knicks went 23-59 last season, giving Thomas a record of 56-108 in his two years after replacing Larry Brown.

Walsh, who took over as president on April 2, kept Thomas in the organization as a consultant, however.

The Knicks made the playoffs just once with Thomas running the basketball operations, losing to New Jersey in a first-round sweep in 2004.

Following the tumultuous 2005-06 season with Brown, Thomas took over the head coaching duties in 2006-07 and had the Knicks within striking distance of a playoff spot at 29-34 when he was rewarded with a contract extension. The Knicks went on to win just four of their final 19 games.

Thomas' tenure with the Knicks was also marred by the sexual harassment lawsuit filed by former team executive Anucha Browne Sanders.

A Hall of Fame player with the Detroit Pistons, Thomas also spent three years as coach of the Pacers and has a five-year record of 187-223.

2008 Presidential Election: Hey Joe Sixpack - Grits Dummy!

By Tor Shephens

One of the events in my life that I have never forgotten occurred when I was in Junior High School. It was when Alex Haley's ROOTS came out.

Just thinking about this has me on edge, in particular as it relates to the present political environment as proffered by Mr. McCain and Mrs. Palin. When I hear “Joe Sixpack”, I can’t help but think this is a code phrase for not me, or the average American, but rather those that harbor the hatred of the past and the racist beliefs that yielded Jim Crow, and even slavery as depicted in the historic television miniseries.

It was cool after Monday's show, but after the Tuesday episode things hit the fan. It was as if everybody in the world was looking at roots. And seeing that folks from around my way were selectively bused to a predominantly white school, the environment during that week was completely different.
Prior to this, we all just had a ball, no problems never. But after that Tuesday segment, like I said it was on. See, that was the episode when Kunta Kinta was made, via whip to call himself Tobe.

There was a tension in the air that day.

Obama Had Me At $150 Million!

Senator Barack Obama’s announcement on Sunday of his record-shattering $150 million fund-raising total for September underscored just how much his campaign has upended standards for raising money in presidential campaigns.

This Black man's campaign has now raised more than $600 million, almost equaling what all the candidates from both major parties collected in private donations in 2004.

It is a remarkable ascent to previously unimagined financial heights — Mr. Obama’s September total more than doubled the record $66 million he collected in August — that has been cheered by some and decried by others concerned about the influence of money in politics. The impact on the way presidential campaigns are financed is likely to be profound, potentially providing an epitaph on the tombstone of the existing public finance system.

Campaign finance watchdog groups said Sunday that Mr. Obama’s September haul bolstered their arguments for the need to revamp the presidential public financing system to restore its relevancy. It is an effort that both Senator John McCain and Mr. Obama have supported but that has faltered in Congress recently.

Democrats, though, may be reluctant to surrender the significant money-raising advantage they have developed over Republicans, saying that Mr. Obama, by cultivating millions of small donors over the Internet, has built what amounts to a parallel public financing system that is arguably more democratic.

“I think there’s going to be a fight inside the Democratic Party on this,” said David Donnelly, a director of Campaign Money Watch, a watchdog group.

In this election cycle, all of the major presidential candidates, except for former Senator John Edwards, opted out of the public financing system for the primary. Mr. Obama became the first major party candidate to bypass the public money for the general election since the system began in the 1970s, backing away from an earlier pledge to accept it if his opponent did as well. It was a move the McCain campaign and campaign finance watchdog groups harshly criticized.

But any effort to fix the system would be complicated by loopholes that permit wealthy individuals and moneyed interests to exert outsize influence, including through 527 groups, which can accept unlimited contributions.

“If you locked me up in a room and said, ‘You fix it,’ I’m not sure there is a way,” said Joe Trippi, the former campaign manager for Howard Dean’s presidential campaign in 2004 and a senior adviser for Mr. Edwards in the Democratic primary last year.

Tad Devine, a former senior strategist for Senator John F. Kerry’s presidential campaign in 2004, said there were plenty of arguments that what Mr. Obama had done was healthy for the democratic process.

“What we’re going to have to figure out,” Mr. Devine said, “is why this is not only good for the Democratic Party but it’s good for the country.”

An examination of Mr. Obama’s intake in September lends credence to arguments by both sides. David Plouffe, the Obama campaign manager, said in a video message sent to supporters that Mr. Obama had 632,000 new donors in September, bringing the campaign’s total to 3.1 million. The average contribution, Mr. Plouffe said, was less than $100.

The full details of how the Obama campaign raised its money in September will not be available until Monday, when it files its official report with the Federal Election Commission. But a separate filing by the Obama Victory Fund, which is the campaign’s joint fund-raising operation with the Democratic National Committee, underscores that Mr. Obama has also been powered by major donors, many of them with interests in Washington, as well.

Mr. Obama’s joint money-raising committee, which can take in checks of more than $30,000 that are divided between the campaign and the D.N.C., collected $69 million in September. The fund funneled $32 million in September to the Obama campaign’s coffers and $26.5 million to the national committee.

The D.N.C., which can spend money on Mr. Obama’s behalf with certain restrictions, announced Sunday it collected nearly $50 million in September and had $27.4 million in cash on hand at the end of the month.

Coupled with his appeals to small donors over the Internet, Mr. Obama has maintained an aggressive, high-dollar fund-raising schedule. More than 600 people wrote checks of $25,000 or more to the Obama Victory Fund in September. They included Dwight Howard, the Orlando Magic basketball star; Andrea Jung, the chief executive of Avon; Gregory Brown, president of Motorola; and Charles E. Phillips Jr., president of Oracle.

McCain finance officials and other campaign finance experts initially anticipated that the Republican National Committee’s stockpile of cash and strong fund-raising, along with the $84 million Mr. McCain received in public financing, might be enough to stay within range of the Obama financial juggernaut.

The R.N.C. announced this month that it raised $66 million in September, which exceeded fund-raisers’ expectations, and officials said it had finished the month with about $77 million in the bank. But the Obama campaign has been outspending the McCain campaign on television by three-and-a-half-to-one, even with spending by the R.N.C. factored in, according to the Campaign Media Analysis Group, which analyzes advertising spending. Black Civil Rights Leader Demands Resignation of California Republicans Who Put Out Racist Obama Slur

This Black Republican Agrees: They Need To Go!

Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson today demand that leaders of the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated based in Upland resign.

Though they have withdrawn the racist newsletter photo mocking Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama and have been rebuked by state Republican officials, they still refuse to acknowledge that the ad or worse their intent was racist. They called the depiction of Obama eating watermelon, fried chicken, and ribs as “innocent.”

“Racist depictions and stereotypes are never innocent,” said Hutchinson, “Whether it’s a presidential candidate or any African-American they demean and degrade. McCain and GOP leaders should call for their resignation.”

Copies of a Letter to John McCain urging him to call for the Republican group leader’s resignation will be released to the press at the briefing.
This is embarassing and needs to be addressed. Now!!!

Lisa Bonet, aka Hobo Kelly, Seems To Finally Be Hitting Her Stride

Thandie Newton Opens In "W", Oliver Stones's Latest Film

Newton’s gorgeous looks nearly did torpedo her chances for W. “I was not an advocate at first for Thandie. When Oliver Stone suggested the idea, I said, ‘What? This is the girl you hire because she’s hot, not for a major character.’ Becoming Condi Rice is a massive undertaking, but Thandie made a total transformation,Thandie came onto the set and surprised all of us,” --- W star Josh Brolin

Check under the hood for the W review

Finding substance in George W. Bush where there seemed to be only thin air, and confident that what's past is prologue, Oliver Stone's "W." is not the hatchet job some may have expected (or hoped for). It is instead a measured and thoughtful meditation on a leader who, this terrific movie believes, inadvertently made the world as roiling as his soul.

His conscience, of course, is another matter. But Stone, screenwriter Stanley Weiser and especially Josh Brolin, in the title role, somehow reach even that uncleared brush inside the 43rd President. Brolin's performance is nuanced yet piercing, going beyond the empty proclamations and idiotic malaprops to finally find a there there.

The film opens with the Oval Office preparations for the 2002 State of the Union address, in which the phrase "Axis of Evil" is to be introduced. Assembled is Bush's cabal - er, cabinet - of advisers, including Vice President Dick Cheney (Richard Dreyfuss), Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (Scott Glenn), National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice (Thandie Newton) and presidential brain-holder Karl Rove (Toby Young).

Janet Jackson Returns To The Stage !!!

Janet Jackson is back and on the mend from her recent hospitalization and "vertigo" treatment that left her with migraine headaches and dizziness.

Last night in Washington D.C. Janet Jackson took the stage to exploding fireworks, clouds of smoke and the sounds of some early hits Wednesday in her first concert in two weeks.

Sporting a huge mohawk and light-colored body suit, the Grammy-winning performer opened with "Pleasure Principle," followed by "What Have You Done for Me Lately" from her 1986 album "Control." Soon after, she sang her latest single, "Feedback."

"It feels so good to be back after being down just a little bit," Jackson told the crowd at the less-than-full Verizon Center.

The two-hour, high-energy show went smoothly, but Jackson did appear winded at times. At one point, she paused to admire her backup dancers, and the audience roared with approval.

At the end of the show, a teary-eyed Jackson told the crowd: "I love you D.C. so much."

Can Ice Cube Escape “Gangsta Rap?”

Ice Cube, the West Coast gangsta rap icon and member of the pioneering group N.W.A. has a new single and video out.

For many in the Black Community that despised the acronym N.W.A. in the first place, (Niggaz With Attitudes) and felt that their largely misogynistic and extremely violent lyrics perpetuated and advocated a negative vision of Black Americans, Ice Cube should not be winning any NAACP Image Awards.

After so much popularity and controversy over their lyrics that banned N.W.A. from many radio stations and tours, and Ice Cube’s solo career has stretched for almost 20years. Even though Cube’s albums were highly political and included large amounts of social commentary that spoke of America’s hypocrisy and hidden racism, he never completely escaped the gansta rap label he and N.W.A. began with. So with a new album out and his new single entitled, Why Me? is it possible for him to be seen as a positive voice in the eyes of some that only remember some of the violent lyrics of the ‘80s?

Why Me? largely focuses on the senseless murder of Los Angeles High School student Jamiel Andre Shaw who was shot down near his home in March due to random gang violence. After two Latino gang members approached Shaw and asked which gang he belonged to, they shot him after receiving no response, as Shaw was simply a standout football player and student looking forward to going to a major university.

Ice Cube’s video features the family of Shaw and says, “Why you wanna murder me? You never ever heard of me. You don't know who I am. I could be part of your family tree. Sent by G.O.D. To save the word you and me. You never know who you facin.' Who ya chasin.' The life you wastin.'"

These words are obviously in sharp contrast to Ice Cube’s lyrics on N.W.A.’s Gangsta Gangsta, “Heres a little somethin bout a nigga like me. Never shoulda been let out the penitentiary. Ice Cube would like to say. That I’m a crazy muthaf***a from around the way. Since I was a youth, I smoked weed out. Now I’m the muthaf***a that you read about. Takin a life or two. That’s what the hell I do, you don’t like how I’m livin, Well f**k you!”

Due to those kinds of lyrics, I wonder if his previous detractors will even listen to his new song’s message that actually agrees with the overwhelming opinion that this needs to stop. Those that still disparage artists like O'Shea Jackson that recorded songs that spoke of senseless killing and street life need to give his message another chance.

Sure Cube, 39, still uses profanity and the word nigga freely in his lyrics, but if a positive message is what many want to get across to young people that listen to his music, how much pain is it really causing? With his name, notoriety, and respect he still has with fans, every little bit from every influence to change things for the better should be accepted.

Folks Who Get It: Stop Trippin Over The Gay Rumors, Robin Roberts Is One Class Act!

Supreme Court Clears Way for Execution Of Black Georgia Man Claiming Some Other Dude Did It!

Death row inmate Troy Davis To Be Executed For Cop Killing

The Supreme Court today cleared the way for the execution of a Georgia man who claimed he was wrongly convicted of shooting a police officer in a dark parking lot in Savannah.

The justices turned away Troy Davis' final appeal in a one-line order without comment or dissent.

His lawyers said seven of the nine witnesses who pointed to Davis at his trial have since recanted their testimony. They said his case raised the "great constitutional" question of whether an innocent man can be put to death.

Apparently, the justices did not agree. They did not explain why.

Davis had been scheduled to die Sept. 23, but the high court issued a stay so it could consider his appeal.

One possible explanation for today's action is that the justices have studied the record and concluded that Davis was properly convicted. A state appeals court, the Georgia Supreme Court, a federal district judge, the U.S. court of appeals in Atlanta and the Georgia Board of Pardons reviewed Davis' case -- including the recanted statement from the witnesses -- and ultimately upheld his guilt.

But the Georgia Supreme Court divided 4-3 on the question. The majority said it put greater faith in the trial testimony of the witnesses. The dissenters said Davis should have a new trial.

Amnesty International USA today denounced the courts' refusal to hear Davis' appeal. "The Supreme Court's decision is truly shocking, given that significant evidence of Davis' innocence will never have a chance to be examined," said Larry Cox, its executive director. "Faulty eyewitness identification is the leading cause of wrongful convictions, and the hallmark of Davis' case."

Davis' conviction rested on the statements of several people who were in or near the parking lot of a Burger King after midnight one night in August 1989. Officer Mark MacPhail was on duty at the Greyhound bus station and came out to stop a fight involving a homeless man who had a six-pack of beer.

MacPhail gave chase to one man, who turned and shot him. The shooter then fired several more times, killing MacPhail.

Troy Davis, then 19, was there, as was Sylvester "Redd" Coles. Both men are black, and they were about the same age, height and weight.

Coles identified Davis as the shooter and was the state's strongest witness in the murder case. Davis' lawyers contend Coles was the shooter and that he falsely pointed to Davis.

During the trial, several witnesses said they saw Davis accost the homeless man, and they said he had a gun. Others said they had seen the shooting from some distance, but most of them said later they were not sure who had fired the shots.

"The only remnants of the state's case against [Davis] are the self-serving testimony of Redd Coles and Steve Sanders' dubious in-court identification of Mr. Davis that occurred two years after the crime," Davis' lawyers said in their appeal to the high court.

President Jimmy Carter, Pope Benedict XVI and Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu are among those who have objected to the execution of Troy Davis.

Iron Man 2 Nix's Terrence Howard For Don Cheadle

Is it Black On Black Crime when one brother loses a job and another brother gets that job?

Marvel Comics and Stan Lee blew us out the water this summer with the hit feature film "Iron Man". This hit featured Robert Downey Jr. as scientist Tony Stark and his side kick Jim Rhodes, was played by Terrence Howard.

But we hear now, for the sequel, Terrence is out and Don Cheadle is in. The new movie is suppose to have an even bigger role for the Jim Rhodes character. Was it money, was it something else that caused this move? We'll keep you updated and hope there was no "stealing" of acting roles going on.

Southern California Burns Again October 2008

The more things change the more they stay the same. If it's October in Southern California... there must be wild fires somewhere. The temperature goes up and the 70 mph Santa Ana winds return. In the last two days the two have combined to create a blow furnace effect maintaining two major wildfires, that have raged through the San Fernando Valley, forcing thousands of families from their homes.

At least two people have died because of the blazes that have burned more than 10,000 acres in the hills and mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, fire and police officials said.

More mandatory evacuations were expected Tuesday morning added Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and local officials have called on President Bush to issue a federal disaster declaration.

More than 1,400 firefighters from throughout Southern California joined the battle to prevent the blazes from pushing closer to pricey neighborhoods on the Pacific coast.

The Sesnon fire, in the Porter Ranch area at the west end of the valley, had burned more than 5,000 acres along a southwestern swath by late Monday.

… Obama Leaning Black Republican Set to Join Fox Radio for Week of Election 2008 Shows Starting October 20th

LOS ANGELES (October 13) – Kevin Ross started his Blogtalkradio program back in February with a phone, a laptop, and zero expectations.

Now, he’s changing the face of online talk with a style all his own. And listeners clearly want to hear what he has to say.

Having the top Current Events show on Blogtalkradio as well as the number one program on Heading Right, the site’s newly created political channel, add FoxNewsRadio.com to Ross’ expanding Web presence.

Carried simultaneously on Sirius XM Radio, hosts from each side of the political spectrum battled it out during a weeklong, one-on-one tournament.

President and CEO of strategic marketing firm 3BAAS Media Group, Ross was crowned “America’s Best Blog Talker” for the right. David McLaughlin of Rome, Ga. was dubbed the Best Blog Talker for the left. The victory (decided by listeners voting via mobile-text message and an online poll) was announced Monday by Spencer Hughes of Fox Across America, who moderated the historic debate series.

“As Internet radio audiences continue growing at breakneck speeds, outlets such as Fox News Radio realize they must engage the blogosphere. It’s non-negotiable,” said Ross, the former KABC weekend radio host looking to bring his self-titled show back to terrestrial radio. “Whether through social networking vehicles such as Twitter and Youtube, or Blogtalkradio, I’m on a crusade to broaden the conversation beyond the tired campaign spokesperson, the snarky strategists, the shrill journalists, or the multitude of characters parading around on cable hoping to land an analyst gig.”

Magic Johnson Faked His AIDS!

Wow, I know of a lot of ways to get attention but pi**ing off basketball legend Magic Johnson can't possibly be your best choice. But that is exactly what Chris Baker and Langdon Perry of KTLK in Minneapolis have done. Read More Under the Hood ...

Magic Johnson criticized a pair of talk show hosts Friday for accusing him of faking AIDS but said he didn't want them to be fired. Chris Baker and Langdon Perry of KTLK in Minneapolis made the remarks during Baker's conservative radio show on Wednesday. After Johnson condemned the statements, the station said it regretted "some offhand remarks" by the pair.

"We can't have people out here making false statements and putting out bad information, because this battle is too big when it comes to HIV and AIDS," Johnson told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

"I poured my life into it and a lot of other people have poured their life into it, into getting out the right information so people can protect themselves and know what HIV and AIDS is all about."

Johnson called the remarks "so stupid," and said he hadn't heard from the station. He also wants the hosts to keep their jobs.
"I would rather they educate their audience," he said.

And Magic Goes On To Say...

General Motors Seeks Merger As Working Brothers Wonder Whats Up.

Three weeks ago while the federal government was rescuing AIG and other financial institutions, officers from the Big 3 automakers GENERAL MOTORS, FORD and CHRYSLER were meeting with Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi and other members of congress trying to get their own "bail out" from the Federal government. It is now revealed that G. M., desperately seeking to avoid bankruptcy, is looking for a dance partner. They first approached Ford Motor Co. with whispers of merger. Rejected, G.M. has now moved on to that other cute gal CHRYSLER.

G. M. executives approached Ford about a possible merger in July, but Ford rejected the idea and ended the discussions last month, these people said.

After Ford decided to remain independent amid an increasingly difficult auto market, G. M. turned its attention to Chrysler. For the last month, it has been in preliminary merger talks with Chrysler’s owner, the private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management.

People with knowledge of the talks described the chances of a deal as “50-50.”

The behind-the-scenes maneuvering illustrates the mounting pressure on the Big Three Detroit automakers to solve their enormous financial problems and stave off bankruptcy.

A G. M.-Chrysler merger, if it were to occur, would have a wide-ranging impact on the American auto industry at one of the most critical points in its history.

Both G. M. and Chrysler are losing market share in the United States and burning through billions of dollars in cash while they scramble to revamp their unprofitable North American operations. But they may be running out of time. With auto sales at their lowest level in 15 years, both companies face the possibility of bankruptcy before their turnaround efforts take hold.

“These are not normal times,” said David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich. “The biggest problem is cash and whether these companies will have enough to survive this downturn.”

For G. M., which lost $15.5 billion in the second quarter alone, the strategy for survival appears to center on pursuing a mega-merger.

In July, G. M. approached Ford with a proposal to combine the operations of the two biggest American automakers. The talks involved several meetings between G. M.’s chairman, Rick Wagoner; its president, Frederick Henderson; Ford’s executive chairman, William C. Ford Jr.; and its chief executive, Alan R. Mulally, people with knowledge of the process said.

October is Breast Cancer & Domestic Violence Awareness

OK, October is not only the month we see so all those orange and black colors in celebration for Halloween. This month we will also see a lot of Pink to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month and right next to it we will see a lot of Purple ribbons as it is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Check under the hood for sites and events.

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in 1985, by breast cancer drug manufacturer AstraZeneca, provider of Arimidex and Tamoxifen. The famous Pink Ribbon was established as the symbol of fighting against breast cancer by Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of Estée Lauder Companies. The cosmetics company also founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. For More Info Check Out : Breast Cancer Info Guide and their article, "Breast Cancer In Black Woman"

Interesting fact: while breast cancer affects one in eight women, as previously mentioned, domestic violence affects one in three. In the whole of the U.S., the state of Nevada has the highest number of women killed by men. Thus, Carson Street will be adorned with purple decorations as well as pink. Advocates to End Domestic Violence offer, among other services, a 24-hour crisis hot line. According to their official website, www.aedv.org, Advocates to End Domestic Violence was founded in 1979 by two battered women as they saw that a need for such an organization was desperate in Carson City. The Chicago Defender has a great article on Black women and Violence.
Also check out these links: http://www.betweenfriendschicago.org/
, or http://www.ncadv.org/

The campaigns will include the traditional pink and purple ribbons, teddy bears and other promotional materials, but also the fundraising walks which usually are 39 miles long. AEDV also features a “Paper the Town” campaign, where people can help adorn the town with informational materials and a local fundraising campaign, “Fill a Can, Feed a Family.”

Former Black Olympic Track Star Tim Montgomery Gets 5 Years In Prison For Pushing Heroin

First Marion Jones, Now Her Baby's Daddy

Disgraced former Olympic track star Tim Montgomery, once dubbed "the world's fastest man," was sentenced Friday in Norfolk, VA to five years in prison for dealing heroin to an informant.

"I was blind — I never had a job in my life," Montgomery told U.S. District Judge Jerome B. Friedman. "I did the wrong thing."

Montgomery, 33, will serve the five-year sentence after he completes a 46-month prison term for an unrelated conviction in New York.

Under an agreement with the government, he pleaded guilty in July to possession and distribution of more than 100 grams of heroin. He received the minimum term under federal sentencing guidelines.

A prosecutor described Montgomery's athletic skills as "super-human," but said he had squandered his talent and the acclaim and the money that came with it. Montgomery won an Olympic gold medal in the 400-meter relay at the 2000 games and a silver in the same event four years earlier. A doping scandal wiped his achievements from the books.

In a nearly empty courtroom, Montgomery accepted his sentence accompanied only by his lawyer, James Broccoletti. His parents and siblings traveled in a van from South Carolina for the sentencing, but did not arrive before the 20-minute hearing ended, Broccoletti said.

"What we find here is someone who has wrecked his life," the prosecutor, Eric M. Hurt, told the court.

He noted that Montgomery's heroin arrest came as he awaited sentencing on a check-kiting scheme that ultimately sent him to prison.

"He has chosen to ignore every benefit given to him," Hurt said.

Montgomery, hands clasped behind his back, softly addressed Friedman.

"I just want to say I've very sorry for what I've done," he told the judge. "I'm sorry to my community and my family."

Friedman ordered five years of supervised release and drug testing after Montgomery serves his heroin sentence. He also called Montgomery "totally irresponsible" for fathering four children with four different women, including fellow disgraced Olympian Marion Jones.

Montgomery's heroin prosecution is based on four drug sales he made in 2007 and 2008 in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. A Drug Enforcement Agency informant made buys that were either electronically videotaped, tape-recorded or witnessed by agents, according to court records.

Montgomery's Olympic medals and his world-record 9.78-second performance in the 100-meter dash were wiped clean after he was linked to the investigation of BALCO, the West Coast lab at the center of the steroid scandal in sports. He also was banned from track for two years.

While he never tested positive for drugs, he retired in December 2005 after the ban was imposed.

Last year, he admitted helping his former coach, Olympic champion Steve Riddick, and others cash $1.7 million in stolen and counterfeit checks.

Riddick is serving a five-year prison term. Montgomery's former companion, Jones, served a six-month prison sentence for lying to investigators about the check-fraud scam and using steroids. AP

Before Jim Brown, There Was "THE EXPRESS" Film Opens This Weekend

For Review Look under the hood.

Published: October 10, 2008

“The Express” is an honorable example of a tried-and-true formula, squarely aimed at a presumably large cross-section of the moviegoing public: people who love football and hate racism. Like “Glory Road,” “The Great Debaters” and numerous other similar movies, it packages a real-life story of athletic triumph and social progress into an accessible, rousing melodrama that is no less potent for being almost entirely predictable.

Girlfight! The Battle of The Aging Black Divas: Tina Vs. Aretha

Aretha Franklin's response to Tina Turner statement in USA TODAY

"I have always appreciated what Tina Turner has to offer and had quietly cheered her on after Ike and her subsequent success. However, with respect to her statement concerning my ego (in saying, 'Her ego must be so big to think she was the only one … that's how queens are') clearly she was talking about herself as she described herself as the 'Queen of Rock' and saying 'that's what Queens do' — particularly since she does not have a clue as to who I am in view of the fact that we have never met."

Oh, it gets better family.

"I never figured her to resort to tacky press just to sell a few tickets. I understand and I know that the concert market is down where ticket sales are concerned. I really had put her in a different class — higher than that.

"Finally, no one has been more gracious or complimentary to their peers than I have and I am confident and secure enough to do so, unlike some others. I wish Ms. Turner all the best, as I always have. Perhaps one day we will meet."

LIAR # 126 - Triffling Rapper Rick Ross Admits To Slinging Coke And Being The Po-Po!

After photos leaked recently of his police academy graduation, rapper Rick Ross first flat-out denied it was him, claiming someone had Photoshopped his face onto someone else's body. But then The Smoking Gun put the clearly ignorant overweight lyricist on front street by pulling his official employment documents. Exhibit A:

I never ratted on a nigga! I never prosecuted a nigga! I never locked up a nigga that is first and foremost. I always felt that me being the nigga I am, I never owed a nigga an explanation.

Here's An Additional Quote For You:

"I never tried to hide my past! I put my name inside all my CDs. My company has my SS #. I could've put a company name...I done been up and I done been down and that's what make me who I am. When I'm making my music and I'm talking about blow, it's because I did it. When I say that I'm rich off of cocaine, it's because I did it. Those are the street principles that apply." -- Rick Ross

Where You Been Maxwell?

Tyler Perry, Union Buster Brings Pain With Payne

Tyler Perry hosted the grand opening of Tyler Perry Studios this past weekend to celebrate the opening of his new multi-million dollar movie and TV studio complex on 30 acres in Atlanta, Georgia. While being feted for his new studio, Perry drew protests from picketers wearing Writers Guild of America T-shirts and chanting “Tyler Perry has no shame,” to protest the recent firing of four writers for the TBS comedy "House of Payne" who claim they were let go for seeking union representation.

I don't know who to blame because these four writers accepted these position knowing good they were non-union. On the other hand Tyler, you are starting to sound like a straight up union hater who's probably voting for John McCain.

Bank of America To Bail Out Countrywide Mortgage Holders

A plan announced by Bank of America will be the most aggressive foreclosure prevention effort ever undertaken by a U.S. bank.

The program, scheduled to start in December, will be open to distressed borrowers who signed up with Countrywide Financial between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2007. Countrywide was acquired by Bank of America.

It came in a legal settlement that the company entered into with the attorney general offices of 11 states, who had sued Countrywide over predatory lending practices, but the company stated that borrowers in all 50 states will be eligible to participate in the program

As part of the initiative, Bank of America will cut monthly housing payments, including mortgage, property taxes and insurance, to no more than 34% of gross income. The move is expected to help keep as many as 400,000 troubled borrowers in their homes.

The program targets holders of subprime adjustable rate mortgage (ARMs), subprime fixed rate loans and option ARMs, but prime and Alt-A borrowers, who did not document their income, will be eligible as well.

I'm looking for Washington Mutual to come up with a program like this.

Esquire Thinks Halle Berry is The Sexiest Woman Alive? Well, Duh!!!

What's black, white and hot all over? Alongside a photo spread that shows her in little more than a T-shirt, Halle Berry talks about being the sexiest woman alive, a title Esquire magazine gives her in its November issue. Halle Berry says "sexiness is a state of mind -- a comfortable state of being."

"I don't know exactly what it means, but being 42 and having just had a baby, I think I'll take it," says Berry, who gave birth to her daughter, Nahla, in March.

"Sexiness is a state of mind -- a comfortable state of being," she says. "It's about loving yourself in your most unlovable moments."

But the biracial sister, who won an Oscar for her role in "Monster's Ball," can't claim the sexiest-woman honor all to herself.

"I share this title with every woman, because every woman is a nominee for it at any moment," she says.

Halle Berry Is the Sexiest Woman Alive, 2008
Buzz up!As the culmination of our anniversary celebration, Halle Berry -- who just had a baby, like, six months ago -- presents the final re-creations of classic Esquire covers. Here, she delivers her acceptance speech.

I've been in the business for more than twenty years, and you decide now, at this particular time, that I'm the sexiest woman alive? Come on. I mean, you couldn't go with the Bond-girl year? You didn't like the orange bikini? I liked the orange bikini.

That would have been a pretty good year. Or what about the Monster's Ball year? That was a sexy moment. Couldn't you have packaged that up with some list of the best movie sex scenes ever? That would have been very easy, very magaziney. But 2008? Well, I don't know exactly what it means, but being forty-two and having just had a baby, I think I'll take it. There are billions of women on the planet, but let's just say for shits and giggles that I am the sexiest woman alive.

First, I would have to thank all the people who made it happen. I would thank the good folks at Esquire for thinking outside the box -- even if those folks are just eight editors wearing competing seventy-five-dollar button-down shirts, swinging themselves around in cheap desk chairs in some windowless conference room somewhere above Manhattan.

I'd also have to thank my "team," the ones who make the magic happen -- my hair designer, my stylist, my makeup artist, and my beloved trainer. And I would absolutely have to thank the photographer, because without him, the camera is all lies of a different sort. I mean, look at the pictures. That takes a lot of work. I'm lucky to have these people. Don't think I don't know it.

Does being the sexiest woman alive imply that I know a thing or two about what's sexy and, possibly, about sex itself? I'm not sure, but here's what I do know: I know damned well I'm sexier now than I used to be. Let me make an argument here -- not so much for me, or even for my age being sexy, but for what I've learned.

I've picked up a little over the years. Sexy is not about wearing sexy clothes or shaking your booty until you damn near get hip dysplasia; it's about knowing that sexiness is a state of mind -- a comfortable state of being. It's about loving yourself even in your most unlovable moments. I know a little bit about that.

Sexiness is also about knowing what's sexy to you. To me, spaghetti is sexy, especially when it's served off the tips of a man's fingers. I like that. And I think wine is sexy, just before sex. It relaxes me. But if I want to get a serious groove on -- if I want an out-of-body experience -- I'm all about the sloe-gin fizz.

I think lingerie is sexy, and I'll wear it, sure. But truth is, I'm good-to-go in a tank top and bare feet -- although every woman should own at least one good pair of pumps. That's really the only wardrobe you need for sex: a tank top and pumps.

When it comes to what I think is sexy about men, I like forearms. That's my body part. They're generally exposed, available, a little bit vulnerable. A forearm is different with every man, and when it comes to forearms, size matters. I don't like them slight.

Ask me what's the sexiest car in the world and I'll just say my man's car, because it smells like him, because his shape is pressed into the seat, because it's littered with little bits of his life -- his golf balls or his chocolate-bar wrappers -- and it's ripe with the smells of him. That's the car I most want to ride in.

What else? Ah, yes: the big O. You know that stuff they say about a woman being responsible for her own orgasms? That's all true. And in my case, that makes me responsible for pretty damned good orgasms these days. Much better orgasms than when I was twenty-two. And I wouldn't let a man control that. Not anymore. Now I'd invite him to participate. I'll tell you this: I've learned my tricks. I know what I like. I do not wait around. I initiate. And I'm not all about frequency. I favor intensity.

There have been some men in my life who have been wickedly sexy and have taught me much about sexual pleasure. There are a few men I should thank, and others I need to forget. But I don't regret. To hell with regret. I like what I am now. I like being a mother. I like my body better since I became a mother. I feel sexier as a result of becoming a mother.

You see, the years go by and you learn, and that just deepens your understanding of every experience. And then sex is better -- it feels like you're in control, and you're sort of not in control at the same time, and that is completely satisfying.

So, yes, there are times when I feel like the sexiest woman alive, but would I ever argue that I am the sexiest woman alive? Of course not. I figure at one moment the sexiest woman alive is a waitress in Abilene, Texas. And in the very next second, it's a woman in the bush of Vanuatu. Then, right away, somewhere else. Sex and sexiness. It's all about the moment; it's about what you know as much as it is what you offer. That's why I share this title with every woman, because every woman is a nominee for it at any moment. Maybe that's why there are so many women these guys love.

If there were a real event where they gave an award for this title, I would wave the trophy here. I would thank everyone all over again, then I'd probably blow a kiss to Tom Chiarella for helping me write this. I would turn my head and say, "You can start the music now, I'm done." I'd be wearing pumps. I'd be just a little breathless. And I admit I would not rush off the stage.
