Folks Who Don't Get It: Rene Marie Was Hired To Sing The National Anthem, Performs Lift Ev'ry Voice Instead

Sing What You Want On Your Dime

At the start of the event Tuesday morning, Denver City Council President Michael Hancock introduced singer Rene Marie to perform the national anthem. Basically, it was a gig where she got paid to do what she does.

Instead, this sister unilaterally decides to perform the well-known black national anthem, "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing." WTF????

To anyone with half a brain, it was no surprise that when she finished, the audience responded with mild applause. The national anthem was never performed.

She may be black, but homegirl is seriously tripping! Period, end of story

Marie told 9NEWS she kept her plans to switch songs quiet until the very last moment. She says only she, her husband and a friend knew she was going to sing something other than the "Star-Spangled Banner."

She says she wanted to express her love of her country by mixing the lyrics of "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" with the melody of the "Star-Spangled Banner."

"When I decided to sing my version, what was going on in my head was: 'I want to express how I feel about living in the United States, as a black woman, as a black person,'" said Marie.

Hickenlooper's staff picked Marie to sing the national anthem. The mayor says he believes Marie did not intend to offend anyone or make a political statement.

When asked if he was offended, Hickenlooper said, "You know I was more confused and I think I was more – what I was, was disappointed and confused and that's why I wanted to talk to her."

"Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" was written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1899 and set to music by his brother in 1900.

City Councilman Charlie Brown took to talk radio Tuesday afternoon to criticize the absence of the national anthem at the State of the City proceedings.

"There is no substitute for the national anthem, period," Brown said. "And that's what really bothered me. You know when we fly the flag, the American flag, it's always the highest flag, as it should be. And that didn't come across today, that didn't happen today."

In hindsight, both Brown and Hickenlooper say they should have stopped Marie or began singing themselves.

Marie says if she had the benefit of doing it over, she would sing the same song.

When asked if she would apologize for what happened she said, "No I do not."

Marie has been singing professionally for 10 years.

Brown says he doesn't have a problem with people expressing their views, but he says Marie chose the wrong venue.

Below are the full lyrics to "Lift Ev'ry Voice & Sing"

LIFT EV'RY VOICE AND SING

by James Weldon Johnson

Lift ev'ry voice and sing, Till earth and heaven ring. Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;

Let our rejoicing rise, High as the list'ning skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,

Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,

Bitter the chast'ning rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,

Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last, Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,

Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;

Thou who has by Thy might,Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,

Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee,

Shadowed beneath thy hand, May we forever stand,

True to our God, True to our native land.

This comment sums up exactly our thoughts on the issue:

What is the big deal and why are so many of you afraid? Ok, I give in that maybe she should have at least asked someone if she could have substituted the song that everyone expected since they were paying her, but to the people who make STUPID comments linking her actions to Obama, you are living in fear.

America, face it that there is a good chance that your next president will be a black man. Your only other choice is a 72 year old grand father (and we all know the presidency ages you quickly). We can't afford John McCain to age any faster than he already is! The woman has caused no harm in singing the black national Anthem. Her song didn't make the gas price to soar to over $4 per gallon or cause food and oil prices to rise. Why aren't you outraged at the failures of our current President?

FOLKS WHO GET IT: CLARENCE AVANT - THE GODFATHER OF MUSIC

It's Black Music Month family, and BlackAmericaWeb.com is examining 20 inspirational visionaries.

Clarence Avant is well deserving of being one of them.

Avant has launched or guided the careers of numerous entertainment stars including, Quincy Jones, Bill Withers, Dennis Coffey, The Presidents, Jimmy Jam Harris and Terry Lewis of The Time.

Harris relayed that his relationship with the former Motown Records chairman began when he and Lewis went to meet Avant after a tour.

‘You guys come in, and leave your manager outside,’ he remembers Avant saying.

I thought, 'Man, he must have asked for too much.' We went in, and Clarence said, ‘Your manager sold you short; you’re worth more than that. Here’s what I’m gonna offer you, and this is what I want to do.’ And we knew right there we were dealing with an honest man.”

In the late 1960s, Avant successfully engineered the first joint venture between a black American recording artist and a major record company.

In 1997, he became the first black on the International Management Board for Polygram records.

In 2004, Universal Music Publishing Group announced it would administer Clarence Avant's music publishing catalogues. The catalogues encompass hit including the Bill Withers classics "Ain't No Sunshine," "Lean on Me" and "Grandma's Hands."

A member of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the African-American Advisory Board of Pepsi-Cola, Avant has also been awarded an honorary doctorate from Morehouse College.

Avant has helped raise $500,000 for the education building at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center and the Morehouse Music Education Building.

“He is a tireless advocate for the black community. We are privileged to have him as part of our college family,” a Morehouse representative stated.

FOLK WHO DON'T GET IT: THUGS WHO BEAT AND ROB THE ELDERLY

A 22-year-old man allegedly not only carjacked 91-year-old WWII Veteran Leonard Sims on May 4, 2007, but --according to cops -- punched him repeatedly in the face and neck.

Authorities believe he apparently either had no idea that he was being recorded on video surveillance the whole time, or else he just didn't care in this brutal crime that was caught on tape in Detroit, Michigan.

Before driving away in the stolen car, police say Deontae Bradley, who has since been arrested, struck the elderly man almost two dozen times. Several times throughout the suspceted attack Bradley allegedly stopped and started to turn away, but each time he turned back to Mr. Sims and began punching again.

O.K. family - enough is enough. The elders in our or anyone else's community should NEVER be attacked, beatened or abused in anyway.

What is worse, people stood by - a total of five - and DID NOTHING!

One must ask:

JUST HOW DEEP IS THAT HOLE IN THE SOUL OF AMERICA?

Come on...aren't we better than this?
