Daddy Diaries #265 - Just Missing My Dad
Yesterday, I spent the day with my oldest. I took him with me as 3BAAS Media Group filmed a Time Warner Access program for HBCU Live, a concept we came up with to promote our client Black Educational Events, LLC.
For those familiar with the annual Angel City Classic Black College Football event in Los Angeles, you know this has become the largest yearly gathering of African Americans west of the Mississippi.
It was a good day. Typical of his personality (which he gets from his mother), my son was very well-behaved. In fact, I actually got the sense he actually enjoyed hanging out with his pops for a change to see what is it I do exactly since my days of being a judge. It's one thing to say to your children "Be your own boss" or "I want you to own something that you created", it's another thing to actually lead by example.
My example was my stepfather, who passed 17 months ago even though it feels like just days ago. I wanted to call him to tell him about the project, to ask him his opinion about these high gas prices, Starbucks closing 600 stores, or his take on when he sees the housing market rebounding.
I just wanted to bond, like my boy did with me.
But he wasn't there to pick-up the phone.
This man, thirty-one years prior, that was initially viewed by my brother and I as being a weird cat who was absolutely not good enough to date my mother, let alone marry her.
A beat.
I call my real father, thinking...
"Hey Dad, I was just checking in.... Oh. No, that's okay. You can call me back later."
A beat.
Time to man-up and keep it moving.
Grateful that I have two sons who have a dad.
That's here!

Daddy Diaries #462 - Brothers, We Simply Got To Do Better!
Kinda Funny, Kinda Not!1. Regarding the identity of the father of my twins, Makeeshia was fathered by Maclearndon McKinley. I am unsure as to the identity of the father of Marlinda, but I believe that she was conceived on the same night.
2. I am unsure, as to the identity of the father of my child as I was being stuck out of a window when taken unexpectedly from behind. I can provide you with a list of names of men that I think were at the party if this helps.
Under the hood it gets better folks. Keep going!
3. I do not know the name of the father of my little girl. She was conceived at a party at 3600 East Grand Boulevard where I had sex with a man I met that night. I do remember that the sex was so good that I fainted. If you do manage to track down the father, can you please send me his phone number? Thanks.
4. I don't know the identity of the father of my daughter. He drives a BMW that now has a hole made by my stiletto in one of the door panels. Perhaps you can contact BMW service stations in this area and see if he's had it replaced.
5. I have never had sex with a man. I am still a Virginian. I am awaiting a letter from the Pope confirming that my son's conception was ejaculate and that he is the Saver risen again.
6. I cannot tell you the name of Alleshia's dad as he informs me that to do so would blow his cover and that would have cataclysmic implications for the economy. I am torn between doing right by you and right by the country. Please advise.
7. I do not know who the father of my child was as they all look the same to me.
8. Tyrone Hairston is the father of child A. If you do catch up with him, can you ask him what he did with my AC/DC CDs? Child B who was also borned at the same time.... well, I don't have clue.
9. From the dates it seems that my daughter was conceived at Disney World; maybe it really is the Magic Kingdom.
10. So much about that night is a blur. The only thing that I remember for sure is Delia Smith did a program about eggs earlier in the evening. If I had stayed in and watched more TV rather than going to the party at 8956 Miller Ave, mine might have remained unfertilized.
11. I am unsure as to the identity of the father of my baby, after all, like when you eat a can of beans you can't be sure which one made you fart.
Yep, you guessed it right - you are all paying taxes to support them.

Daddy Diaries # 43 - My Oldest Wants Every Parent To Make Sure Their Kid Is Playing Club Penquin!
By Jordan (my son the blogger, at 9)Using cartoon penguin players, kids can waddle around, converse and play with one another in a snow-covered world.I found out about it by kids at school talking about the site and playing it on our school computer. You should really go on this game because you can do almost anything on it like eating, playing games, living in a house, throwing snowballs, and talking to other people that are penquins. On a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 8 1/2!

DADDY DIARIES #480 (Part 2) MY SIX YEAR OLDS WANTS TO BE PUSSYCAT DOLLS ...

So to continue ... Just as I was looking in the yellow pages under "A" for the nearest abbey, my friend Herb calls and offers my family the equivalent of a music oasis; four tickets to the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. They are playing an all Tchaikovsky night, featuring the Piano Concerto and the 1812 Overture with Fireworks! How wonderful to take my kids to their first classical concert, their first orchestra concert and their first trip to the historic Hollywood Bowl. And if it's a bust, at least the kids will say they liked the fireworks. Can it get any better?
Yes it can. When we arrive we find out the guest conductor, the first orchestra conductor my kids will remember laying eyes on ... is Thomas Wilkins, a Black man! And then bonus points ... Thomas Wilkins is from my home town of Detroit, where back there, he too has twin girls, just like me ... TOUCHDOWN!I give my girls the significance of "conductor Wilkins", and they are only mildly amused. Trouble? As the music plays I'm all set to give my girls the 'blow by blow' of what's about to happen (given my music background), when one of my daughters whispers to me, "This is the music to Sleeping Beauty." Say what? She is only 6 years old. This has got to be a fluke or maybe she over heard someone. But when the orchestra starts playing the next selection and her twin sister says, "Now they are playing Swan Lake"; I'm floored! The following song, both daughters agree the music is once again from Swan Lake, but this time it is definitely The Wedding Song. OK, when I tell you I am on the moon without a rocket, I know you feel me.
So now I want to know who has taken over the exceptional music education they obviously are getting. I first pat myself on the back, because "the apples don't fall far from the tree, right?" But I then cave in to my wife who made me send them to private school even for kindergarten. OK props to the wife, she got it right. But noooo, the girls reveal their secret weapon ... they finally confess they owe their music prodigiousness to ... Barbie Videos! That's right that little plastic blond bi*ch, has done something right. She has a whole dancing fairy series. Barbie Sleeping Beauty, Barbie Swan Lake. Each video has the actual dancers from the American Ballet Theatre, digitalized, with the Tchaikovsky music played by the London Symphony.
So just as I got my first taste of classical music from those BUGS BUNNY, cartoons, Barbie is putting it down for this generation. So you'll excuse me as I run to the Target store. Barbie NUTCRACKER CD is on sale for $5.99.

DADDY DIARIES #480: TO BE A PUSSYCAT DOLL ... MY SIX YEAR OLDS LIFE AMBITION

I have six year old twin daughters who, through much great effort on my part, have become music aficionados.
I started them at age two and three with nursery songs, and happy birthday and before I knew it they had that "nick, knack paddy whack give a dog a bone." down solid.
As they got older, I stepped it up to "Doe a Deer a Female Deer... (from 'The Sound of Music') and then I did a 'throw back' and taught them the theme to television's "The Courtship of Eddie's Father." You remember "... People let me tell you 'bout my best friend..."
This song made many a Kodak moment as I pushed them in swings at the park. And as a college music theatre major and saxophone player, I was pretty pleased with my legacy I was passing on.
While driving to the store, I snapped my neck into permanent whiplash to hear my my sweet six year olds singing, but obviously not understanding, ALL the lyrics to Beyonce's "To the Left".To say I was concerned is an understatement. We might have a problem.
But no, two days later we are on the road again. This time I locked up the car breaks when, without any prompting from the radio, they started to sing the Pussy-Cat Dolls big hit, "Don't Cha?"
When they got to the lyrics, "Don't Cha wish your girlfriend was a freak like me?" I pulled the car over and came to a complete stop.
At their delicate age, they knew the song was sung by the Pussy Cat Dolls and then they boldly declared they were giving up on their career choices of doctor and veterinarian to become PUSSY CAT DOLLS. We definitely have a problem.

I blame this problem on their mom of course, because I only listen to sports radio and 70's disco. So if the song had been "So Many Men, So Little Time," you could blame me.
But this was obvious the heathenistic music of their mom. Mom who covers her coarse listening habits by saying, " this is just the music they play in my spin class at the gym ... it's work-out music. But were had I gone wrong? I taught them to resist music indiscretions. What had lead to the meltdown of their musical sensibility??
Next Time: Can their ears be rescued? Back to Dad's Music School.

DADDY DIARIES # 479 - DAD, CAN YOU WATCH "ROLL BOUNCE" (AGAIN) AND BOND WITH US!

Dad: What's on?
Boys: Roll Bounce.
Dad: You guys have seen that already!
Oldest: C'mon Dad, watch it with us.
Dad: No, I've got some work to finish up.
Youngest: You haven't spent any time with us daddy.
A beat, then:
When you're children stop asking to spend time with you, or don't ask at all, that's when you're no longer a father!

DADDY DIARIES #478: NEW DADDY TIGER WOODS CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE AT BRITISH OPEN
Fathers, Oh Fathers only you truly understand and can explain to Tiger Woods ... what has gone wrong with his golf game:* Fellas, share with the brother the awesomeness of child birth.
* Boys, high-five golf's international sensation on his procreation abilities.
* Men, smile politely when the multi-millionaire says, "We have a new baby!"
* Homey, nod your head as Elgin learns the meaning of "family."
* Shorty, remind Tiger about the adage, “little girls take care of you in your old age.”
* Brothers, tell our hero that you also had that wonderful sense of teamwork after taking two weeks off from work.
That said, Daddies now tell Tiger the real deal that ...
No matter how hard we try to catch up on work (after missing those two weeks on a job we were already behind on), no matter how understanding the boss says he is (while doubling your workload), no matter how much Red Bull you consume at staff meetings, no matter how many lunches you now have to skip, no matter how many days you must come in early with little or no sleep ...
NOTHING - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING - COMPARES WITH THAT STRANGE WEEPING WOMAN.
That strange weeping women ... who keeps blowin' up your "crackberry" every half hour, complaining on the phone about 'HOW'... the baby's not latching on, how your mom needs to go back to Virginia, how her mom - whom now she's reasoned - needs to go with your mom back to Virginia ... how her girlfriends insist everything she is doing is wrong and how her conscience keeps telling her they just might be right. Then there's 'THE' bloating, the baby crying for no reason, the sleep deprivation, the big boobs that "don’t feel sexy at all" (that's a toss-up), the overall feeling of "losing it.”
And just before hanging up the phone, your queen declares, “My nipples hurt... so when are you coming home?!?!”
FATHERS, TELL TIGER THAT ALL OF THIS...
TENDS TO REALLY AFFECT A BROTHA’S GOLF GAME.

DADDY DIARIES # 477 - ILLEGITMATE CHILDREN OF BLACK NBA STARS ASK, "WHERE'S DADDY?'

This Story Came Out Ten Years Ago. Has Anything Changed?
Nearly one-third of all children in this country are born to unwed mothers.
But this week, Sports Illustrated reports that among professional athletes out-of-wedlock births are epidemic.
And of athletes in the major sports leagues, those in the NBA appear to have the greatest number of cases. According to SI, one of the NBA's top agents says he spends more time dealing with paternity claims than he does negotiating contracts.
The agent tells the magazine that there might be more kids out of wedlock than there are players in the NBA. According to Sports Illustrated, Larry Johnson of the Knicks is supporting five children by four women, including two he has with his wife, and Shawn Kemp of the Cavaliers, who is not married, has fathered seven children.
Other NBA players who have been the subject of paternity-related lawsuits include Patrick Ewing, Juwan Howard, Scottie Pippen, Jason Kidd, Stephon Marbury, Hakeem Olajuwon and Gary Payton, as well as Larry Bird, who is now the coach of the Pacers, and current NBC game analyst Isiah Thomas.

BLACK MEN SLAM LEBRON JAMES' 'CAVALIER' ATTITUDE ABOUT FATHERHOOD
The 8 lb., 6 oz. baby was born at 12:51 a.m. in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The heir To Michael Jordan's throne also has 2-year-old, LeBron Jr."LeBron and Savannah are overjoyed with the birth of their son," a rep for the couple says, "and are looking forward to bringing him home to his big brother, LeBron Jr."
In having a Father's Day discussion with Black men who are also dads, the discussion last week turned to Lebron and an interview he gave prior to the birth of his son.
James, 22, a forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers, is in the thick of the NBA Finals, with his team trailing the San Antonio Spurs three-games-to-none in the best-of-seven series.

KOBE, SEAL, BERNIE MAC, BRUCE BOWEN & NEYO: HAPPY FATHERS DAY BLACK MEN
We see you Kobe, with acting grandpa Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, looking like a father instead of a spoiled brat. Keep this look brother, it's much more becoming.
Seal's woman Heidi Klum, 34, was snapped out for a walk with Henry, 20 months while the singer is on tour.
While many of his Ocean's Thirteen co-stars are new fathers, Bernie Mac, 49, is relishing being a new grandfather. AKA Bernard Jeffrey McCollough, Bernie's daughter, Je'Niece, 29, gave birth to his first grandchild, Jasmine, whom he calls "Jazzy," seven months ago.
Bruce Bowen -- a guard for the San Antonio Spurs -- became a father for the second time when wife Yardley Bowen recently gave birth to the couple's second son, 6 lb, 11 oz. Ozmel. The new addition joins big brother Ojani, 2.
Ironically, Cleveland Cavalier baller LeBron James is who Bruce is guarding in the NBA Finals. LeBron is currently awaiting the birth of his second son with partner Savannah Brinson. The San Antonio leads Cleveland 2-0 in the playoffs.
Singer Ne-Yo, 24, recently revealed his son Chimere, 20 months, is not biologically his child.
Determined for Chimere to have a father in his life, the R&B star volunteered to raise ex-girlfriend Jessica White's son as his own after Chimere's biological father split.
"He's known no other father but me since the day he was born, and though I did not make him, I am his father and he is my son, and that's what it is" Ne-Yo was quoted as saying.
Bravo Black man!
Ne-Yo, who was not planning to disclose this information, broke the news during an interview in an attempt to stop a blackmail situation.
