The View and the N-Word

So, I saw this clip on The View and the only thing I could think of was, "Here we go again." Then before I knew it, Elisabeth Hasselback had a Hillary Clinton moment and was brought to tears. Was she actually crying because she couldn't use the "N-word" when she wanted without being labeled a racist? As if some great power of privilege had been taken from her as a white woman?

I do not think that.

However, I must admit, I did feel the pain of her frustration as just a person trying to do the right thing. Multiply that same type of frustration by most Black people of this country since its inception by a million and then one can begin to get a glimpse of what it is like to be Black in America.

Long ago, here on this blog I said the sins of this country's forefathers as it relates to slavery and the history of the mistreatment of Black people haunts not only Black people, but white people as well. Yesterday's discussion on The View proved me right. It also demonstrated the value of having a balanced panel to include Black people like most shows had not done up until now when discussing issues as they pertain to Black people.

Whoopi Goldberg To Host 2008 Tony Awards, Stellar Black Performers Ignored

Broadway's Tony Awards will be presented by actress Whoopi Goldberg on 15 June at New York's Radio City Music Hall. Question is, will she be the only African American to grace the stage that night as standouts The Country Girl, starring Morgan Freeman, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with James Earl Jones and Terrence Howard, received no nominations.

Or was this just a snub to the big show with big names, as A Bronx Tale with Chazz Palminteri and Cyrano de Bergerac starring Kevin Kline and Jennifer Garner were ignored as well.

Fashion Roadkill, Relaxed Media Presence And Her Love Of Dragons: There's Just Something About Whoopi!

Whoopi Goes There

Gracing the latest issue of Jet Magazine, hitting the stands today, the outspoken comedienne-actress is making Americans tune in each morning to "The View" to hear her view on hot topics from politics to relationships.

Whoppi Goldberg admits that unlike the other women on the show, she doesn't spend a lot of time in hair and wardrobe before each show. She's also not worried about gaining a few extra pounds.

"It takes six minutes for makeup," she laughs. "It really does. The best thing about me is I don't have to look like anything. I don't have to do the makeup, the eyelashes, and the hair. I am not the glam queen. So if I have a little weight on my backside, it's OK, because it's just Whoopi."

Oscar Drama Heats Up As Whoopi Goldberg Gets "Emotional" Over Academy Awards Dis!

Black Oscar Winner & First Female Host Is Not A Happy Camper

I still remember 2002 when Whoopi was hosting the otherwise extremely vanilla Academy Awards. That was the year that Halle Berry made history as the first non-white female to win Best Actress for her so-so portrayal in Monster's Ball, and my man Denzel Washington took home Best Actor honors for Training Day.

Since the 80th Annual Hollywood self-congratulatory event was made of about 85% retrospective clips, it meant that viewers were forced to watch every "moment" from Oscar history on Sunday.

Except one, everything Whoopi Goldberg ever did. Despite her Best Supporting Actress win for "Ghost" - and being the Oscars host on four separate occasions between 1994 and 2001 - there was almost no sign of Whoopi Goldberg anywhere in all the endless montages on Sunday. And that made Whoopi Goldberg cry. On The View no less!

Then again, as the women on The View pointed out, Whoopi Goldberg was only the second black woman to win an Oscar and the first woman to host the Oscars at all, which does make her slightly significant. Maybe the clip researchers should have double-checked their list to make sure they weren't leaving anyone important out.

Or maybe - just maybe - the only person in the entire world who even slightly cares about any of this is Whoopi Goldberg, and everyone else is happy that she was left out of all the montages because it made the Oscars five or six seconds shorter than they otherwise would have been.

Still, though, Whoopi Goldberg's tearful reaction to the snub just shines a light on the difference between her and her predecessor on The View. Because if Rosie O'Donnell had hosted the Oscars and missed out on a montage clip, the Kodak Theatre would be a mess of rubble, steel and fragments of Jack Nicholson's skull by now.

Shame on you Academy... Ladies let's rally around our sistah'. Given the political climate of America, with a woman and an African American quite possibly being our next president, you have some nerve. Someone hit me with the idrect email address of the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Science, to complain about this unforgivable and obvious intentional slap in the face.

It went down on THE VIEW like this:

"Maybe they accidentally lost a clip of you hosting. ... But I think it's wrong," Elisabeth Hasselbeck said. Joy Behar said "being slighted is never fun." Sherri Shepherd wondered if Goldberg had made someone mad.

"Undoubtedly," Goldberg said, smiling. "Undoubtedly I (bleeped) somebody off yet again. You know what, I don't -- I don't know."

"Hey, we think you're a great host," reassured Barbara Walters, the creator of the ABC chatfest."I think we should do our own montage of you to make up for it," Hasselbeck said.

"This makes up for it," Goldberg responded, before getting up and kissing each co-host on the cheek. She and Walters then embraced.

ON THE VIEW, WHOOPI TRIES TO BE CONTROVERSIAL LIKE ROSIE BY DEFENDING... MICHAEL VICK???

MICHAEL VICK'S QUANDARY

By A.C.

Michael Vick's arguably heartfelt apology seems to have gotten him a fair number of brownie points with sportswriters and sportscasters around the country.

But Whoopi Goldberg???

Drawing a scathing rebuke from animal rights activists on Tuesday for defending the U.S. football star's role in dogfighting during her debut on ABC's talk show "The View," the outspoken comedian and Oscar winning actress had a lot to say.

"He's from the South, from the Deep South ... This is part of his cultural upbringing," Goldberg said of the Atlanta Falcons quarterback, whose recent fall from grace has been one of the most stunning in the history of U.S. sports.

Sounding contrite certainly can buoy the guilty and Vick very well could be sincere and genuine. He apologized for his inhumane behavior to numerous pit bulls, saying he needs to grow up and, hopefully, will learn from his involvement in illegal dog-fighting on the grounds of his Virginia estate and, in a few days' time, lost millions upon millions of dollars in salary and endorsement.

Some on the Internet and in the mainstream media have criticized the 'system' of hoisting athletes on pedestals beginning in middle school and not holding them to socially acceptable behavior until they've broken the law repeatedly. Individual responsibility has rarely been mentioned.

"For a lot of people, dogs are sport," Goldberg said on the show. "Instead of just saying (Vick) is a beast and he's a monster, this is a kid who comes from a culture where this is not questioned."

Nevermind that Vick, 27, pled guilty to federal dogfighting charges, admitted he took part in an illegal, interstate enterprise known as Bad Newz Kennels and helped kill underperforming dogs.

Inevitably, Michael Vick will have months to contemplate his individual behavior while behind bars. And if he's contrite enough, he likely will find the National Football League ready to forgive and welcome him back with open arms in a few years, notwithstanding rabid dog lovers and folks who belong to groups like PETA.

He'll be contrite and we will be, as always, forgiving. Right Whoopi?

The View Welcomes Whoopi! Web Traffic Increases As Black Superstar Takes On Daytime TV

Critics, who cares? Media executives, forget about 'em. We all know who Whoopi Goldberg is trying to impress as she takes over the moderator's seat at ABC's "The View."

The blogosphere!

Keyboards were already buzzing about the soap opera that started with Star being kicked to the curb, Meredith high-tailing it over to "The Today Show", and then Rosie's adrenaline filled nine months of drama.

It's unlikely that Whoopi will be able to top any of that, but hey, she's game.

"It's a lot to sit next to [Barbara Walters]. It's a lot. It's a huge deal," Goldberg said. She hopes the power of positive thinking will help her succeed.

"I am going to look in the mirror and tell myself, 'Yes I can. Yes I can,'" Goldberg said. "There are things I'm going to have to learn like the sort of pop culture, who people are because this is where I'm lacking."

Even if Goldberg believes she has work to do, Walters said she is excited about the new addition to the cast. And she wants Goldberg to bring some of her signature acts to the show. "I also hope that Whoopi will occasionally do something from her Broadway show where she's another character," Walters said. "Let's face it, we're so lucky to have her. This is a brilliant performer."

SHERRI SHEPHERD NOT THE TWO MILLION DOLLAR WOMAN

Ok, We now know Whoopi Goldberg is the new co-host for televisions "The View". But there are actually two slots open on the show and comedian Sherri Shepard was to get that other one, right?

Word is, negotiations broke down with Sherri over the salary. It seems that she wanted the money they offered "Whoopi", a reported 2 million dollars. What???.

Now Sherri, baby, there is nothing wrong with ask'n for 'Whoopster like' money, but baby ... Whoopi has and Oscar, a Tony, an Emmy and a Grammy.

I think for the exposure you would have received, alone, your salary demand should have been closer to $29.95 an hour, than two million a year.

Bad move.

Now the rest of the country is back to saying, Sherri Who?

WHOOPI AND SHERRI: "THE VIEW" NEEDS TWO BLACK WOMEN TO REPLACE STAR JONES

Will Two Sistah's Give The Boring, Post-Rosie ‘View’ Some Much Needed Flava?

Comedians Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd are reportedly the new hosts of "The View."

Of course none of this is definite, with neither ABC nor the show's producers confirming any of these rumblings.

The Los Angeles Times, however, is reporting that Whoopi, who had been tipped for months to fill a “View” seat, will join the show in the fall.

And Sherri Shepherd, the African-American comedian who was present when Rosie O'Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck went held up a few months ago, has also been reportedly offered the job.

The Times says ABC is in final negotiations with the two women who would add more diversity to the all-White panel.

Besides a pregnant, soon-to-be-on-leave Hasselbeck, the current “View” hosts also include creator Barbara Walters, and Joy Behar.

The new panelists are expected to be announced publicly next week. ABC however would not comment on the news, telling the Times, “We have nothing to announce right now.”

With Star Jones debuting on Court TV next month, looks like all just might be well with the universe... that is until Rosie's tell-all book is released.

And we'll be right here baby, watching those fireworks!
