American Gangsta May Not Be Shooting Blanks, But Beowulf Is Clearly The New Box Office Sheriff With The Biggest Guns

American Gangsta Bullies Its Way Pass $100mil

The animated flick "Beowulf," slew the competition over the pre-Thanksgivng weekend and gave a huge shot in the arm to the future of 3-D films. The Paramount Pictures release earned $28.1 million in its opening weekend — 40 percent of which came from special 3-D showings in regular theaters and on Imax screens.

Still enjoying a little box office honey at number two was “Bee Movie”, sweetening its pot to $94 million with a $14.3 weekend. Denzel Washington's “American Gangster” continues to blow the competition away, however, with another $13.2 million to pass the $100 million mark and rounding out the top three.

Is American Gangsta an American stereotype???

Unfortunately for "Gangsta", various reports have Denzel's film, the budget of which has been rumored to be more than $100 million, selling on street corners in New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere for $5 or less. Unlike other pirated films, however, is the breakneck speed in which "Gangster" moved beyond Internet file-sharing and typical movie-studio headaches. In light of this ongoing writers strike, what does this portend for the industry as a whole? Whatever the answer is, I find it ironic that here you have a movie about illegal activity and now these street hustlers are taking the story to heart. Literally!

Russell Crowe Spits in Denzel Washington's Face!

Denzel Washington is opening with Russell Crow in the new film AMERICAN GANGSTA. Surprisingly enough after the volatile Crow first met Denzel and spit on him, it's a wonder they ever worked together.

Russell Crowe as we all know is not a shy guy. The 'Gladiator' star recently revealed that he went to audition for a movie role opposite Denzel Washington 12 years ago, but things didn't really go as they were planned.

Here's how it went down on the 'Gangsta' set. "As I yelled my first lines, a big gob of spittle hit Denzel right on his lower lip," the Sun quoted her, as saying. The Aussie actor said that it was very nice of Denzel to ignore the saliva and continue with the scene. "I genuinely thought that he would shout 'Cut!' and stop everything because it can't have been very nice for him. But he didn't. We went on and we finished the scene," he said.

However, Crowe added that Denzel did give him a piece of his mind once the cameras stopped. "And when I'd said my last line and the cameras stopped, he turned to me and growled, 'There's nothing I like better on a Monday morning than to get a face-full of saliva,'" he said.

OPRAH & DENZEL HOOK UP!

Oprah Winfrey, host of the award-winning talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show, has yet another project that will hit the theaters next year. The Great Debaters, in which she serves as a producer, is a drama starring and directed by Denzel Washington.

The upcoming movie isn’t Winfrey’s first work as a producer. A part from hosting The Oprah Winfrey Show, she also serves as the talk show’s producer, as well as on shows and films like Before Women Had Wings, The Women of Brewster Place, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Amy & Isabelle, Tuesdays with Morrie, and Building a Dream: The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy just to name a few.

As for Washington, this is his second directorial job following the 2002 film Antwone Fisher, in which he also served as one of the producers.

Written by Robert Eisele and Suzan-Lori Parks, The Great Debaters is based on a true story of Melvin B. Tolson. As a professor at Wiley College in East Texas, he has been inspires by his students to create the college’s first debating team, which successfully conquered Harvard in the national championships.
