With Oprah Winfrey scheduled to pay tribute to the cast of Saturday Night Live in her final year on television, this clip of Lady O when she hosted SNL is making the rounds:
While the other sista in the skit only last one season, Danitra Vance was a gifted performer who made history as the first African American woman who joined the SNL line-up. Why Danitra? Well, see for yourself:
Here she is appearing alongside the talented Vickilyn Reynolds and legendary Ms. Loretta Devine, featured in the soon to be released Jumping The Broom:
Sadly, at the young age of 40, Danitra lost her courageous battle with cancer in 1994 (fellow SNL alum Gilda Ratner also passed away from cancer).
Thank you Ms. Vance for the work you left behind. Job well done!

My Journey With Oprah - From Unimpressed Student To Inspired Colleague
Farewell and HelloBy Kevin Ross
When Oprah Winfrey hit the national stage on Sept 8, 1986, who could have imagined that a 32-year-old news journalist with a strange, biblical-inspired name would amass such a level of fame, wealth and influence?
And it all started with a television show.
For me, what initially stood out about the undisputed queen of talk was that she was one of only a few minority personalities on network TV, particularly during the day.
Admittedly, I was underwhelmed watching the A.M. Chicago host interview Mr. T during a brief visit to the Windy City in the early 80's. “Who is this Oprah?” I remember saying disdainfully to my Morehouse College buddy. “People like her," he responded defensively. "She’s more popular here than Phil Donahue!”
(Years later, that same friend would marry a woman who ended up working at Harpo Studios.)
By the time Winfrey’s show debuted around the country, I had just finished college. Although I felt like the same person, the “new” Oprah I was now eying seemed more entertaining. I actually wrote to her the following month, inquiring whether I could be on the show to discuss why students such as myself preferred attending Historically Black College and Universities over mainstream white institutions (in my case the University of Southern California).
Hoping to get her attention, I included a 1986 Men of Morehouse Calendar that some classmates and I had created and sold earlier that year.Although I was never contacted by the show’s producers, I remained a loyal fan. Between scouring newspaper job listings and filling out law school applications, I always made it a point to get my regular Oprah fix.
But once my student loans started getting uppity and my parents began inquiring whether I was as clear about my career path as I kept insisting, it was decision time. Was I going to continue working the marketing job I had just landed, or follow the path that I felt compelled to pursue?
With a little help from the media mogul and the debut of a one-hour drama set in a fictitious law office, the answer would be revealed.
You see it was the power of television that ultimately gave me the confidence to believe that I had a shot at having a legal career. At the time, I neither knew anyone in the profession, nor did I fully understand what would be required to succeed in it.
What I did know was after watching LA Law, which also premiered in the Fall of 1986, I became convinced that if Mario Van Peebles and Blair Underwood could portray polished attorneys who just happened to be black, then I could actually be one?And with Bryant Gumbel successfully at the helm of The Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show obliterating afternoons and The Cosby Show dominating primetime, the so-called “boob tube” kept reinforcing in my mind one thing and one thing only:
Achievement!
In 2010, that message is making a comeback!
Look no further than the upcoming Primetime Schedule of the major networks and you’ll find more "color" (at least in front of the camera) than we’ve seen in quite some time. And NBC, to their credit, is leading the way with shows like Undercovers, Outlaw, The Event, Law & Order: Los Angeles, and Community.
In daytime, returning programs like ABC’s The View with Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Sheppard, Meredith’s Better with Audra Lowe, and Debmar Mercury’s The Wendy Williams Show feature multi-talented women conversing with everyone from reality stars to an African American Commander-In Chief. Joining that mix is Holly Robinson Peete, one of the six ladies helming CBS’s new chatfest The Talk.
With respect to syndicated game shows, Emmy-winning host Wayne Brady kicks off a second season of Let’s Make A Deal, while comedian, radio host and NY Times best-selling author Steve Harvey will now have the pleasure of kissing cheeks on Family Feud.
And if you go inside any of the court shows this year, you’ll discover 5 out of 10 feature African Americans dispensing justice They include mainstays Judge Joe Brown, Judge Greg Mathis, Divorce Court with Judge Lynn Toler, as well as Judge Karen’s Court.
I did say five, right?
The remaining one is mine.
And that's because I ended up going to law school and working as a LA prosecutor before serving for several years as an elected member of the California judiciary. Now, America’s Court with Judge Ross is set to find its niche with audiences this Fall.
"These years with you… have enriched my life beyond measure," Oprah stated when she announced her decision to leave her award-winning show.
In joining my soon to be colleague for her 25th and final season (beginning Monday September 13), I look forward to sharing with the iconic figure what many, irrespective of race, truly feel about her journey.
“Thank you for inspiring me Ms. Winfrey. Mission accomplished!”
Former Superior Court Judge Kevin Ross is the host of America's Court. The show, from Entertainment Studios, debuted on broadcast television Monday, September 20. 2010 (check your local station for show times)

Derrick Ashong, From Youtube Obama Supporter, To Talk Radio Host On Oprah's Sirius Network

Black Harvard Graduate Gets His Own Gig
It turns out that Derrick Ashong, 34, was not just some random brother on the street waving a Vote For Change placard during the historical 2008 presidential election. The eloquent intellectual has been doing speaking engagements all over the world, Youtube just provided the platform.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Also known as DNA, Ashong has spoke at the London School of Economics, the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and the United Kingdom’s Parliament. His subject of choice has been the passion of Barack Obama’s young supporters.
But it was his knowledge of now President Barack Obama's position on health care reform during the campaign that resulted in Ashong receiving over 1 million viewers that made the world take note.
Enter the queen of all media Oprah Winfrey
His new show on Oprah Radio will debut at 10:00 a.m. on January 23; after the premiere, the show will move to noon EST on Saturdays. Subjects will include politics, pop culture, music, the arts and — here it is — social media. He plans to answer questions received via social media channels, although it’s not clear yet which services he’ll use and in what ways.

Daytime Queen Oprah Winfrey to Leave Syndication in 2011

Reigning TV Diva To Announce Next Move on Nov. 20 Broadcast
What a bombshell!!! The incomparable Oprah Winfrey will end her long-running talk show after her 25th season draws to a close in 2011.
Word is the billionaire talk-show host will reveal her plans on her eponymous program Friday.
ABC-owned WABC New York reported the news on its Web site on Thursday afternoon; Winfrey's Harpo Productions confirmed the report. The ABC owned stations have always served as the key station group for The Oprah Winfrey Show, which is distributed by CBS Television Distribution.
Winfrey, long a source of pride and inspiration for African Americans, is starting her own cable network called OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network in a joint venture with Discovery Communications. OWN will replace what is now Discovery Health Network on cable systems.
What remains unconfirmed is whether Winfrey will move her talk show to OWN, although that's what Hollywood blogger Nikki Finke reported earlier this month, reiterating comments that Discovery chief David Zaslav made one year earlier during a conference call.

Oprah Duped With Another Book Hoax...Who's The Real Loser?

Herman Rosenblat's memoir, "Angel at the Fence," deemed by Winfrey as "the single greatest love story" she's ever featured on her show, may now be coined by some as the single fakest love story, after the author admitted he fabricated the story of how he and his wife met at a Nazi concentration camp.
They did not, as Rosenblat falsely wrote in the book, meet at a concentration camp during World War II, where Rosenblat claimed his wife had thrown him apples and bread over the barbed-wire fence that separated them.
In reality, Rosenblat and his wife, Roma, were set up on a blind date in New York years after the war was over.
In the end I submit to you Oprah is not the loser in this hoax...we the American public are.
You see Oprah, in one of her rare selfless acts, is promoting these books not so much has to hype herself or the authors; as much as it is to hype reading. Wow!, there's a concept, reading books. There are a lot of ways to escape the stress of our real lives; drugs, alcohol and turning family members into punching bag, to name a few. But reading a book is a great alternative to all of these.
The effect this latest hoax has on the publishing world may do a lot of damage. First of all these lies make the publishers look like idiots for not fact checking. Then it makes it harder on new authors to get their books published with thoughts of not telling the truth.
And what about Oprah? Should Oprah get tired of people taking advantage of her and not confessing straight up that their book is a fake, then we will have no more Oprah book club and yet another reason for Americans not to read.

Oprah Winfrey And HBO Jump The Broom And Hook It Up

After 20 years at ABC, Winfrey's Harpo Films has inked a three-year exclusive deal with HBO to develop and produce scripted programming, including series, miniseries, movies and documentaries.
"This is truly a dream come true for us," Harpo Films president Kate Forte said. "It's part of the natural evolution of our company."
Harpo's deal with HBO was sealed after two meetings -- one at CAA, which reps Harpo, and one at Winfrey's estate in Montecito, Calif.
"It sounds corny, but it was almost love at first sight," HBO's West Coast chief Michael Lombardo said. "The more we talked, the more we realized that our companies are very similar in sensibilities."
The pact starts Jan. 1, after the expiration of Harpo's current first-look longform pact with ABC.
As part of Harpo's long-term relationship with ABC, the company produced a slew of acclaimed and highly rated TV movies and miniseries under the "Oprah Winfrey Presents" banner, including the Emmy-winning "Tuesdays With Morrie" and "Their Eyes Were Watching God." Harpo also made its first foray into unscripted programming on ABC this year with "Oprah's Big Give," produced by Harpo Prods.
ABC approached Winfrey and Forte about extending their deal, but Harpo opted to go to HBO.
"ABC was always incredibly supportive of us. It is much more about the opportunity HBO offers us," Forte said. "There are natural limitations to network TV, including being driven by ratings and commercial sponsorship."

Thomas Beatie Has A C-Section: The Guy Delivers A Girl!!!
Okay, that just sounds wrong. On soooooo many levels.
Thomas Beatie, 34, told chat show host Oprah Winfrey it had been his dream to one day have a child. "I opted not to do anything with my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day," he said.

What This Transgender Didn't Deliver: Respect!
He kept his female reproductive organs after having breast surgery to remove glands and flatten his chest. Beatie was inseminated using sperm from an anonymous donor.
Having grew up in Hawaii as Tracy Lagondin, the former Girl Scout, model and finalist in a teenage beauty pageant, began living as a man when he was in his 20s and officially changed his gender, he told People magazine.
The baby girl's birth was natural, a source at St Charles Medical Center in Bend, Oregon told ABC News, and took place on Sunday. Source

Folks Are Praying That Reverend Wright Did Not Cost Barack The Nomination
Obama Still Tainted By PastorWith voters stampeding to the polls in Indiana and North Carolina today, most Americans say Sen. Barack Obama has failed to distance himself from his former pastor"s incendiary remarks, the new Fox 5/The Washington Times/Rasmussen Reports poll finds.
In the poll, 66 percent said the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., who lost Oprah as a member of his church back in the 90's, hurt the biracial Black man. And an overwhelming majority (likely excluding minorties, particularly African Americans) said Mr. Obama's repudiation of his former pastor did not rescue his presidential campaign.
Only 24 percent said Mr. Obama's denunciation made them "more likely" to support the senator's presidential campaign, compared with 27 percent who said they were "less likely" and 43 percent who said his explanation had "no impact" on their decision.
While wife Michelle makes goo-goo eyes over Will Smith, Mr. Obama had to field questions about Mr. Wright yet again yesterday morning as he made the rounds of television news programs on the eve of the two most important primaries of the Illinois senator's career in light of the cheap shots everyone in the media has been taking at him.
The history making Democrat said voters will judge him separately from Mr. Wright. "I think the American people recognize that I'm somebody who's always been about bringing people together, not dividing them," Mr. Obama said on NBC's "Today" program.
If Mr. Obama wins the Democrats' nomination over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, he may not have to endure any more attacks regarding Mr. Wright. Sen. John McCain, the Republicans' presumptive presidential nominee, says the pastor will not be a campaign issue.
"It won't. I have said that I will not discuss the issue further," the Arizona senator said, though he did say Mr. Wright's comments were "outrageous."

Lisa Bonet Boycotts Barack's Most Popular Supporter, Next On The Oprah Winfrey Show
Minus Denise and Claire Huxtable, everyone else from the popular Black 80's sensation, The Cosby Show, was all up on Oprah's stage today.
Lisa Bonet and Phylicia Rashad were MIA, with the official word that Bonet wasn’t able to make the reunion because she just had a baby. That didn't stop Raven Simone, Tempest Bledsoe, Malcom Jamal Warner and the big sister no one remembers (her name was Sandra, right?), everyone looks like they are doing well for themselves.
Bill Cosby joins his TV children, including Sabrina Le Beauf sans husband Alvin, via satellite so he can put “Dad’s” two cents in. When critics would tell him that black families didn’t really live like the Huxtables, Bill was glad to have the support of his cast. “The pleasure of all of this is not one of those people that you’re sitting with has ever been at a loss to straighten people out about what the intention was of the show,” he says. “And that makes me very, very proud.”
For Bill, his response to critics who said they had never seen a black family like the Huxtables was simple. “My answer’s always been, ‘Well, you need to get out more often."

Barack Obama The Womanizer...Secrets Revealed!
Womanizer, Yes. Isn't that what you call a married man who through his good looks, smooth talking and debonair ways has a bevy of beautiful woman who are anxious to get with him and prove their love and devotion. Ok some might also use the word p-i-m-p, but I'm trying to be nice. And obviously Barack Obama has been very nice to the ladies.
How else would you explain the love fest that ocurred when Michelle Obama, Oprah, Caroline Kennedy and 1st lady of California Maria Shriver showed up for a rally at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion this past Sunday?
These women came here to let Obama and the rest of the women voting on Super Tuesday's Primaries that it's alright to vote for Obama though logic may tell you to vote for a woman.
Why the urgency? Well A Field Poll out Sunday had the race a tossup, with Clinton at 36 percent and Obama at 34 percent among likely voters in Tuesday's Democratic primary. But there was a marked gender gap, with women favoring Clinton by 13 points and men favoring Obama by the same margin.
Also, check these Women’s Voting Facts:
* Women vote in higher numbers than men, and have done so in every election since 1964. In 2000, 7.8 million more women voted than men did. Because of unprecedented voter registration efforts, women may vote in even larger numbers in 2004.
* Women have voted at higher rates than men since 1980. In 2000, 56.2% of registered women voters went to the polls, compared to 53.1% of men voters. More women register to vote than men. Some 68.7 million women were registered to vote in 2000 compared to 59.4 million men. Initial reports show the trend will continue in 2004.
* Women are late deciders, and make up a higher number of undecided and swing voters than men. Women are 60% of undecided likely voters in the latest Battleground Tracking Poll conducted by Lake Snell Perry & Associates and the Tarrance Group.

So the long of it is, that smooth talking Obama eeds all the women he can get!

OBAMA PULLS EVEN WITH HILLARY IN CALIFORNIA POLLS AS OPRAH & CAROLINE KENNEDY JOIN HIM SUNDAY ON THE COAST
Two months ago Hillary Clinton held what seemed like an insurmountable lead in the state of California Democratic primary. Today, Saturday February 2, with two days to go before the "Super Tuesday" Democratic primaries, Barack Obama has erased that lead and received the endorsement of La Opinion, the bible of Spanish-speaking Angelenos.
With a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, numbers from a recent Gallop poll show a dead heat for the nomination in the entire state of California.
On Sunday, appearing together for the first time will be Barack, Oprah and Caroline Kennedy. West Angelus Church in South Central and Poly Pavillion at UCLA are just two of the venues they will try to fit in. Our 3BAAS Los Angeles Bureau will keep you updated and bring you exciting information on this big visit.

OBAMA GETS LA TIMES ENDORSEMENT AND ONCE AGAIN, BRITNEY SPEARS IS KILLING MY BARACK BUZZ
Democrats preparing to vote in Tuesday's California primary can mark their ballots with confidence, knowing that either candidate would make a strong nominee and, if elected, a groundbreaking leader and capable president. But just because the ballot features two strong candidates does not mean that it is difficult to choose between them. We urge voters to make the most of this historic moment by choosing the Democrat most focused on steering the nation toward constructive change: We strongly endorse Barack Obama.
The U.S. senator from Illinois distinguishes himself as an inspiring leader who cuts through typical internecine campaign bickering and appeals to Americans long weary of divisive and destructive politics. He electrifies young voters, not because he is young but because he embodies the desire to move to the next chapter of the American story. He brings with him deep knowledge on foreign relations and on this nation's particular struggles with identity and opportunity. His flair for expression, both in print and on the stump, too easily leads observers to forget that Obama is a man not just of style but of substance. He's a thoughtful student of the Constitution and an experienced lawmaker in his home state and, for the last three years, in the Senate.
On policy, Obama and his rival Democratic candidate, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, are a hairsbreadth apart. Both vow to pull troops from Iraq. Both are committed to healthcare reform. Both offer candid critiques of the failed George W. Bush presidency, its blustering adventurism, its alienating stance toward other countries and its cavalier disregard for sacred American values such as individual liberty and due process of law. Get the rest, as the paper's endorsement of McCain.
