QUICKIE: WHITE BOY FROM QUEENS IS KING OF THE BALL

Matt Murphy, from Queens, is escorted out of the stands after catching Barry Bonds' 756th home run, breaking Henry Aaron's career mark. The lucky 22-year-old was bloodied and bruised, but now stands to make half a million on what will clearly be a much sought after collector's item.

2007 IS GOING DOWN AS THE YEAR OF BROTHERS NO LONGER CALLING WOMEN BITCHES, BARACK... AND BARRY BONDS!

INTRODUCING.... HOME RUN KING BARRY BONDS

Yes, it will no doubt be one of those moments in sports that will be replayed years from now, and we all know why. Or do we?

For some, particularly the throngs of San Francisco Giants fans, the drive to center will be the night slugger Barry Bonds persevered after maintaining he was innocent of all the accusations that we've already heard and contemplated ad nauseam.

For others, baseball number 756 will reflect the ills of society as we knew them in 2007. Cheating, bad sportsmanship and lack of humility are a few terms that immediately come to mind. In short, the conversation will be reduced to Bonds being someone who could have been a "great hall of famer who instead succumbed to the pressure of success."

And then there are Black folks and what we think about Barry Bonds.

Given what feels like a steady drumbeat of negative news about Black men filling prisons, Black men not marrying Black women, and Black men not uplifting the race, celebrating Bonds is a no-brainer.

Most Blacks will voraciously throw back in everyone's face within earshot that Bonds has not been charged for committing any crime. Assuming arguendo that he is, our system of justice is predicated on a presumption of innocence until guilt is proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

African Americans will also focus on the double standards and hypocrisy that this country sometimes is too quick to disregard. No matter how much we want to romanticize the past, all heros have had their "issues." Babe "The Bambino" Ruth was certainly no boy scout, and don't think any of us have forgotten how White racist attitudes are what actually kept Black men from initially participating in America's favorite pastime.

While it's true that Barry Bonds may never fill Hank Aaron's shoes, Aaron was initially not the celebrated figure he has now become. Quite the contrary, his place in history was marred by death threats, blatant slights, and deep-seated hatred solely because of the color of his skin.

But that didn't matter last night when Aaron's mug appeared on the board congratulating Barry, with Willie Mays on one side, his son on the other. If nothing else, it was symbolically one of those moments that I wish we saw more of. Having lost my dad back in December, seeing this Black man being gracious and vunerable -- thanking his deceased father with a bittersweet mix of joy and sadness --really hit a nerve. And I don't even like baseball!!!

"My mom was proud and said she was glad she was alive to see me just tie the record, let alone pass it." Bonds said the press conference after the game. " I know what my dad would have said -- what the hell took so long?"

Many of us are saying the same thing Barry Bonds. Because what we saw last night was humility and a true love of the game. We saw the little boy who saw his dreams materialized. We saw the future ambassador of the game and history in the making ala Black presidential candidate Barack Obama.

There's nothing like seeing a brother rise to his greatness. For me, this is one YouTube clip I will be replaying... with pride!

LOVE HIM OR HATE HIM, BLACK SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS STAR BARRY BONDS IS NOW THE HOMERUN KING

The Players In The Barry Bonds Reality Show

Before San Francisco Giants’ slugger Barry Bonds finally passed Hank Aaron’s record for the most career home runs at 756 last night, baseball fans and baseball haters alike were watching and waiting for the inevitable moment when he would be the sole record holder.

Bonds’ often fiery and standoffish attitude towards journalists coupled with the ongoing (and apparently true) allegations that he’s used steroids to help propel his launch into the record books, adds another dramatic side story that has kept everyone glued to their TVs.

Other side stories in this compelling soap opera include Bud Selig, the obviously reluctant commissioner of baseball, and good friend of Hank Aaron.

Selig's openly negative approach to choosing to be in attendance as Bonds broke the record due to the swirling drug allegations placed the second camera shot squarely on his seat once number 756 sailed over the wall.

AND THEN THERE'S HANK AARON HIMSELF!

The entire scene was set with the major names and faces ready for their close up. And now we know the name of the the poor bastard who will be ushered into the record books as Bond's victim. No, I'm not talking about the Mets fan from Queens who caught the ball. I'm talking about the pitcher.

Hurler Mike Bacsik of the Washington Nationals will go down as the one who threw the infamous pitch that will be replayed over and over again for the next 20 years.

Despite how many wins, saves, or strikeouts he currently has, this one pitch will be the career identifier next to the pitcher’s name that accompanies the asterisk next to Bonds’.

Bacsik will never shake the label of being the man that allowed it to happen. Had he simply walked the ever-expanding Bonds, that would have garnered more boos and names referring to female genitalia thrown at each pitcher that tries it.

Since this was a lose/lose situation no matter how you look at it, I give credit to Bacsik for allowing the Incredible Hulk of baseball to trot the bases in triumph.

As to each of the pitchers that gave up the other 755? Who cares?

How many times have we seen Aaron’s record breaking homerun on SportsCenter? Have you ever heard anyone even mention his other hits?

Just as he’s rounding second base on that clip, two random fans come running along side him, giving him handshakes and pats on the back. Even after the 10,000th time you’ve seen it, you wonder, “how did they get on the field without being mauled and hauled away? Security and player safety must have not been a concern back in ’73.” So much for nostalgia.

Now that the record's been broken, speculation is already running rampant over when Bonds will retire so that Alex Rodriguez (with his baggage) can break his record. Looks like this reality show has already begun casting for next season.
