Does it really pay to be nice and kind? Is it true nice guys (or gals - women) always finish last? Sometimes it is easy to feel like they do.
My daughter is reading a book for her summer reading requirement entitled The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli. As I flipped through it, there was a passage that caught my attention:
Men have less hesitation about offending one who makes himself loved than one who makes himself feared, for love is held together by a chain of obligation which, because men are sadly wicked, is broken at every opportunity to serve their self-interest, but fear is maintained by a dread of punishment which never abandons you.
So, I dare ask the question; is fear the primary reason people do what is right, because they are afraid?
