Kennedy Assassination 40 Years Later: Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow!

While I was only just shy of 2 years old at the time, Bobby Kennedy embodied the qualities I often write about: courage, peace, faith, forgiveness and happiness. Today marks the 40th anniversary of his shocking assassination and I want to reflect on what it all means.

His untimely death took place in my hometown of Los Angeles at the famous Ambassador Hotel just minutes away that since has been torn down. I'm particularly touched today as a result of an interview I saw this morning on MSNBC's Morning Joe with author Thurston Clarke of the latest in a number of books about Kennedy entitled, The Last Campaign: Robert F. Kennedy and the 82 Days that Inspired America.

Clarke spoke about Kennedy's unique ability to touch people from all different backgrounds and bring people together. He also touched on Kennedy's struggle to overcome the impact of the assassination of his brother President John F. Kennedy and how on the night of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. he found himself having to break the news of King's death to a crowd of predominantly Black people in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In breaking that news, it was the first time Bobby Kennedy spoke publicly about the assassination of his brother almost 5 years earlier.

Clinton Takes Heat For Kennedy Assassination Reference In Relation To Obama

Hillary Clinton apologized for referring to Robert F. Kennedy's assassination in June 1968 while justifying her continued campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Under the hood, we've got the details.

"I regret that my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and particularly for the Kennedy family was in any way offensive," Clinton said after a campaign event in Brandon, South Dakota.

She made the reference during a meeting days ago with the editorial board of the Sioux Falls Argus Leader newspaper. A video of the interview was posted on the newspaper's Web site.

``My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right?'' Clinton said in response to a question about calls for her to end her campaign. ``We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand'' calls to drop out, she said.
