Media Alert! The son of former Vice-President Al Gore Jr has pled guilty to drug charges in an effort to avoid prison time.

Al Gore III just entered into the plea agreement which allows him to take advantage of California drug diversion program Proposition 36.

If Gore III complies with all the terms and conditions of the program, he will be able to withdraw his plea and prosecutors will dismiss the case as early as 2009.

LISTEN UP BLACK FOLKS: AL GORE'S SON PROVES THAT DRUG ADDICTION CAN TRUMP EVEN MONEY AND PRIVILEGE

Hi I'm Al, And I'm An Addict

While Al Gore is out saving the planet, his namesake has been charged with felony drug-possession charges and other offenses, authorities told People.

One of the more disturbing details of the arrest is that this member of the Gore clan had 140 Vicodin pills and "dozens" of other prescription drugs.

If convicted on all charges, Albert Gore III faces up over three years in prison. But state law makes him eligible for Proposition 36, a California drug diversion program that allows those struggling with substance abuse to seek treatment over incarceration. His arraignment is set for Aug. 1 in Orange County's Laguna Niguel.

The only statement from the former vice-president was that his son was, "getting treatment."

Allegedly driving over 100 mph, Gore, 24, was initially pulled over in a Toyota Prius for speeding on Independence Day.

Police, who had searched the car because they smelled marijuana, found prescription drugs including Xanax, Valium, Soma, Vicodin and Adderall, as well as a small amount of weed.

In all, he was charged with two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of marijuana, and a speeding infraction, the DA says.

Upon completion of the 18 month drug program, the charges that he would otherwise plead to would subsequently be reversed and dismissed.

Gore has clearly been struggling with addiction for some time. In August 2000, he was ticketed for speeding in North Carolina, and had his driving privileges suspended. This was during the presidential election where Bush, some say, stole the election from his father. Two years later, he was cited for DUI in Virginia.

He eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year's probation. In December 2003, Gore was arrested for marijuana possession in Maryland after he was pulled over for driving with his headlights off. He was sentenced to drug counseling in that case.

AL GORE III ARRESTED, KILLS BUZZ OVER FORMER V.P.'S CHANCES AT 08 PRESIDENTIAL RUN

This is NOT the green Daddy Gore has been preaching about!

Former Vice-President Al Gore, on the eve of a major concert designed to raise awareness of global warming, got quite a bang for July 4th when his son was arrested in California early Wednesday on suspicion of possessing marijuana and prescription drugs.

Authorities have confirmed that Al Gore III, 24, was driving a blue Toyota Prius about 100 mph on the San Diego Freeway near Laguna Niguel when he was pulled over at about 2:15 a.m.

Initially focusing on the speeding violation, deputies reportedly said they smelled marijuana and searched the car. They found less than an ounce of marijuana along with Xanax, Valium, Vicodin and Adderall, which is used for attention deficit disorder.

"He does not have a prescription for any of those drugs," a sheriff's spokesman said. Gore was being held in the men's central jail in Santa Ana on $20,000 bail. He was later released after he bailed out.

A spokesman for the elder Gore said he was traveling and could not immediately be reached for comment. The official story is because he is one of the organizers of the Live Earth concerts taking place around the world on July 7.

Behind the scenes, what's really going is Gore and Tipper are busy giving lil man a stern lecture and a major time-out, not to mention curtailing his driving privileges for the rest of the week.

Seriously though, this isn't the first time we've heard about Gore's namesake screwing up.

Reuters is reporting that Gore III was arrested in 2003 for marijuana possession and in 2002 for suspected drunken-driving.

In 1989, aged six, Gore almost died when he was hit by a car, and required extensive surgery and physical therapy.

There is definitely more to this story and we have a hunch that this and some other things are what's really keeping the 2000 presidential candidate from making another run for the White House.

What say you?
